I walked past him casually like I had not noticed him standing there.
“Hi kids.”
“Hi,” they answered awkwardly from behind me.
Dave’s voice followed quieter this time: Careful.
“Hi.”
I nodded once politely. Barely.

The twins were not even looking at him and honestly that gave me a small guilty satisfaction I refused to examine too closely.
Dave shifted slightly closer, watching them now.
“So what’s happening today?” he asked, lowering himself closer to their level. “What are you both unboxing?”
Eli did not even look up properly.
“It’s our birthday in five days,” he explained casually. “So mum is doing a birthday gift countdown till that day.”
Dave paused.
His fingers slowed slightly where they rested against one of the puzzle cards.
“Countdown?”
Iturned toward him finally.
“Their birthday is in five days.”
The room shifted subtly after that. Tiny. But noticeable.
Because suddenly Dave went very still.
His eyes moved slowly toward the twins. Then back toward me.
“Five days?”
