Chapter 427 Get to Work

Kaia replied softly, “Hunderstand. I’ll try to kill her.”

Finistry

In all honesty, she didn’t hate Maya. There was no personal grudge between them serious enough to end with one of them dead.

Maya had never even done anything particularly cruel to her.

But ever since Maya appeared, Kaia’s entire life had been turned upside down

The man she’d always called Dad was no longer her father.

Even her younger brother hated her now.

Is all this just because I’m not related to them by blood? Kaia couldn’t understand it. Family isn’t only about blood, is it?

Maya’s family accepted her even though she wasn’t related to them by blood, didn’t they?

Kaia had spent the past few years feeling lost. To return home, she’d been forced to side with a foreign government and Asterio and agree to everything they asked of her.

It felt as if nothing in her life was under her control.

Kaia didn’t hate Maya, but she couldn’t help wondering.,

If I kill Maya, will everything finally end? Can I go back to a normal life?

That question had gone through her mind countless times.

Every change in her life had begun with Maya.

In the end, after struggling with the decision again and again, Kaia still chose to hold on to the gun.

Maya created a group chat with Ernest and George.

The group was called “Get to Work.”

All three still had the default profile icon. Maya started a group voice call and got straight to the point.

“Is it hard to track down Asterio’s senior members?”

George and Ernest both answered, “Yes,” at the same time.

After all, it was a loose civilian network, and any random person on the street could be a member, so where were they supposed to start? Even if they found a few members, tracing them back to headquarters would be difficult.

For once, Ernest spoke with the precision of a true professional. “Asterio operates like a decentralized

network. Each member only knows who they report to and who reports to them, and all contact is one- on-one, so breaking one link doesn’t affect the rest.

“If you catch one person, they’ll give you two or three names at most, and those people will either be dead or gone by the time you find them.”

It was nearly impossible to bring down the whole organization in one sweep.

George’s eyes were half closed as he added, “We can only trace the network one person at a time and work our way up, so we shouldn’t tip them off until we’ve confirmed everything and are ready to move.”

Maya asked, “Can you two work together?”

She genuinely thought they were both highly capable and would make a good team, so she added, “You’d nake much faster progress if you worked together, wouldn’t you?

George answered bluntly, making no attempt to hide his disgust.

‘I’m not working with him. He makes my skin crawl.”

Ernest replied sarcastically, “You think I’d be thrilled to work with an intel broker with no morals or professional ethics? I’m a respectable person.”

Ask anyone in the underworld, and they’d tell you George had no credibility, no professional ethics, and has a terrible reputation.

Once a deal was done, anyone who worked with him had better pray he hadn’t learned any other secrets, or those secrets would be in the highest bidder’s inbox the next day.

At least Ernest came from a reputable intelligence organization and wouldn’t casually leak a client’s

secrets.

‘Stop arguing!” Maya’s head buzzed as she shouted, “I just want information on Asterio. Would it kill you two to work together?”

Realizing Maya was genuinely angry, both men immediately stopped bickering.

George leaned back in his chair, let out a low, irritated huff, and went quiet.

Ernest’s lips curved into a smile. “Come on, don’t be mad, Maya. It’s just a little teamwork. I’m sure your brother and I will make a great team.”

He deliberately drew out “Maya” in an overly affectionate tone.

“Why are you saying her name like that?” George immediately bristled and demanded, “Are you two close?”

“Of course we are.” Ernest smiled calmly. “I’m Ms. Clark’s dog, after all.”

The voice channel fell silent for three seconds.
