But the footsteps continued approaching. Soon, that familiar, crisp scent washed over her. Then, his voice sounded right next to her ear.
"Go take a hot shower. Aaron dropped off a change of clothes for you over there."
Suzie didn't move. She didn't respond. Yes, she had been through hell yesterday, and she desperately wanted a proper shower.
But there was absolutely no way she was getting naked in a locked room where he was the only other person.
A second later, the mattress dipped as he sat on the edge of her bed.
Suzie's heart jumped into her throat. She shot up instantly, glaring at him.
"Your bed is over there!"
She had only sat up to yell at him, but now they were at eye level. Her gaze landed squarely on his chest.
Those... ridiculously sculpted pecs. She had seen guys like that on TikTok.
She had seen him like this on the night he got drunk and they slept together. She had felt that chest when he aggressively kissed her at the Baylor Manor...
Suzie's cheeks burned hot. She whipped her head to the side, her voice icing over.
"Put your clothes on and go back to your side of the room."
Jamie's lips curved into a faint smirk. His voice dropped low, rich and husky. "Do you plan to spend the rest of your life totally alone? Haven't you ever thought about finding another man?"
Suzie closed her eyes in sheer exasperation. Was this his new tactic? Since she wouldn't talk about the past, he was just making small talk to get a rise out of her?
"I will find someone, but it definitely won't be you," she snapped coldly. Without missing a beat, she slid back under the covers and yanked the blanket all the way up over her head.
Seeing that she was completely ignoring him, Jamie sat in silence for a moment before quietly walking back to his companion bed.
Deep into the night, the occasional hurried footsteps echoed from the hospital corridor. Suzie wasn't sure what time it was, but she woke up needing to use the restroom.
She yelled and bolted out of the bathroom as fast as her legs could carry her.
The shock instantly vaporized whatever sleepiness she had left.
She ran to the window, threw it open, and patted her chest, taking deep, gulping breaths of the cool night air in a desperate attempt to cool her burning face.
That absolute bastard. What a shameless creep. Doing *that* in a hospital bathroom? She had never actually walked in on a guy doing that, but she knew exactly what was going on.
What? Had he really not been with any other women over the past few years?
Or had he just been entirely celibate?
Then again, what was he like when they were together? Before Chloe showed up, Suzie actually thought he might have some sort of physical issue.
She was still cursing him out in her head when that familiar, crisp scent suddenly washed over her...
