She immediately took a step forward, grabbing his arm. "Mr. Baylor..."
Before the rest of her plea could leave her lips, she was met with his razor-sharp glare. Terrified, she instantly dropped her hand. "I'm sorry, it was a reflex... I can revise the proposal."
"There's no need," Jamie replied coldly. "Out of respect for Mrs. Yates, you can try collaborating with DC Entertainment in the future. That is the extent of it."
With that, he strode briskly out of the office.
Aaron hurriedly followed him like a guilty child, swallowing the questions he had wanted to ask.
He knew exactly who Crystal was. Her aunt had some history with Jamie's mother. But he also knew that his boss utterly despised people trying to leverage personal connections for business deals. Regardless of who they were, Jamie insisted everything go through standard corporate protocol.
Seeing the dark cloud hanging over his boss's face, Aaron deduced that Crystal must have asked for a favor and thoroughly annoyed him. If Jamie decided to point fingers later, the blame for letting her slip through the cracks would land squarely on Aaron's shoulders.
Aaron trailed Jamie all the way down to the garage. Only after they were seated in the car did Jamie break the silence.
"Any movement from the vice president lately?"
"We've gathered some evidence of embezzlement, but it's not enough to take him down in one blow," Aaron replied respectfully. "We've also noticed he's been in increasingly close contact with Myron Finch from Starlight Entertainment."
Aaron hadn't previously considered Myron a threat. On the night of the banquet, when the woman Myron kept on the side was injured, Jamie had ordered Aaron to handle the situation. Aaron had simply followed standard procedure, forcing Lexi to apologize and cover the medical expenses.
Aaron understood perfectly. Given Myron's character, there was no way a company of that size was completely clean. Couple that with the rampant rumors of his predatory behavior, and there was plenty of dirt to uncover both professionally and personally. Jamie's instruction to start with the woman by Myron's side was likely because, after seeing her at the banquet, it was obvious she was flighty and foolish—an easy weak link to exploit.
As Aaron drove, he was just about to ask for their destination when his phone rang. Glancing at the screen mounted next to the steering wheel, he quickly said, "Mr. Baylor, it's the genetics center. Let me pull over."
He answered the call and was informed that the documents were ready for pickup.
Jamie tapped the back of Aaron's seat. "Head to the center. I'll pick it up myself."
Aaron acknowledged the order and sped toward the facility as fast as the car would go.
