A few minutes later, Zoey was pulled out of the scanner. Suzie immediately stepped forward, scooping the little girl into her arms and holding her tightly.
After getting the timeframe for when the results would be ready, she walked straight toward the door.
Just as they reached the hallway, Zoey pointed over Suzie's shoulder. "Mommy... look. I got blood all over his shirt. It's my fault, so I need to take it home and wash it for him."
"Don't worry about it, sweetie. Mommy will take care of it. Let's go finish the rest of your tests," Suzie said, picking up her pace without so much as a backward glance.
Standing outside the door, Aaron noticed Jamie's dark expression and Suzie's hurried retreat. Caught in the awkward middle, he quickly scurried after Suzie.
"Right this way, Ms. Sterling."
Suzie ignored Aaron, but she didn't argue either.
She paused briefly, turning to ask Oliver and Mia to take the boys down to the hospital's courtyard. The corridors were packed with people and reeked of antiseptic; it was no place for healthy toddlers to hang around.
As they went through the rest of the tests, Jamie stuck to them like glue, accompanying them and continuously coaxing smiles out of Zoey.
Suzie had neither the mood nor the energy to throw a fit or argue with him. All she wanted was to get the checkups done, get the results, and take her child home.
Once the final test was completed, they found themselves standing in a quiet corridor. Suzie pulled a small talking plush toy out of her bag and handed it to Zoey. "Sit right here and play for a second, okay? Mommy needs to say thank you to the nice man. After we talk, we'll go find your brothers."
Her tone wasn't furious or hateful. It was chillingly calm, like a boss issuing a termination notice.
Without waiting for a response, she turned to walk back to Zoey.
She hadn't taken three steps before Jamie grabbed her arm. His voice was smooth but firm. "You said what you needed to say, but I haven't. We have two hours until the reports come back. Let's talk."
Jamie shot Aaron a meaningful look. The assistant immediately caught on, strolling over to sit on the bench next to Zoey. Seeing the kid supervised, Jamie practically hauled Suzie toward the stairwell without a word of warning.
"Are you trying to show off how strong you are?" Suzie hissed, struggling against his grip. "This is basically kidnapping!"
