Wyatt jumped down nimbly, taking cover behind the helicopter door as Cassandra followed right behind him.
The two stood back-to-back on the ice. They were surrounded by an endless expanse of snow, the wind howling across the lake without a single other sound to break the silence.
"You ready?" Wyatt asked.
Before Cassandra could answer, a beam of light suddenly pierced through the darkness from afar. It wasn't the scattered beam of a headlamp, but the straight, needle-thin laser of a sniper scope, pinning right against his chest.
"Get down!"
Cassandra's voice and the crack of gunfire rang out at the exact same time!
She had already pivoted her muzzle, her hands faster than her eyes. With a two-round burst, flames erupted from the barrel, illuminating the small patch of snow in front of them. A muffled grunt echoed from the distance, followed by the dull thud of a body hitting the snow, like a sack of potatoes dropping to the ground.
"That's one," Cassandra said.
Wyatt lay flat on the ice, his face pressed against the freezing surface, the chill seeping straight through his cheek and into his bones. It wasn't until Cassandra hauled him up and swiftly dragged him behind a jagged ridge of ice that he managed to gasp out between frantic breaths,
"Holy shit, your aim... is absolutely insane!"
"Open fire!"
On the other side, Adrian roared into his radio.
Three gunshots erupted in near unison.
Cassandra tackled Wyatt to the ground, pressing one hand firmly against his head while lifting her submachine gun with the other. Bullets whizzed right over them, striking the helicopter's fuselage with deafening, metallic clangs.
Wyatt was completely speechless.
The battle-hardened police captain had never been pinned to the ground by a woman like a helpless damsel before.
"Little girl, I don't need you to protect me!"
Grumbling, Wyatt rolled to the side, dropping to one knee as he raised his pistol over it. His gaze swept the darkness ahead, his breathing steady, the muzzle tracking his line of sight before a sharp bang split the air.
A blood-curdling scream echoed in the distance.
"That's two."
Wyatt's voice sounded from behind the ice ridge, carrying a heavy pant.
