Sloane's hand gave his palm a discreet, deliberate squeeze.
Josh tightened his grip, instantly catching her drift.
Seconds later, the frantic crunch of boots tore through the silence.
Lilah skidded to a halt, clutching the tiny white bottle. She dropped to her knees, breathless, quickly twisting the cap off and shaking out a single white pill.
"Sloane, open up—"
She pushed the tablet toward Sloane's pale lips.
But a split second before it touched her mouth, a hand shot out like a viper.
He didn't take it—he snatched it.
Josh moved with terrifying speed, totally blindsiding Lilah. He ripped the pill from her fingertips, sending it flying in a tiny arc—
The very next moment, his other hand clamped around Lilah's jaw, squeezing ruthlessly to pry her mouth open. He shoved the pill deep into the back of her throat, instantly slapping his palm over her lips to trap it inside.
"Swallow," he growled.
Lilah's eyes nearly bulged out of her skull.
She thrashed wildly, clawing at Josh's arm and leaving vicious, bloody scratches across his skin. Choked, desperate sounds clawed their way out of her throat as her face flushed a furious crimson, veins bulging at her temples. She tried to gag, fighting to spit the tablet out, but Josh's hand was an iron vise. The pill was wedged so far back that her body's natural reflexes betrayed her, forcing a heavy, desperate gulp—
It went down.
Josh instantly released her.
Lilah collapsed forward, frantically shoving her fingers down her own throat. "Ugh—ugh!" She dry-heaved violently, tears and snot smearing her face as acidic bile spilled from her lips, melting tiny black craters into the pristine snow.
"Hack! Cough—ugh!"
But nothing came up.
Her face drained from red to a terrifying, deathly pale, eventually morphing into a sickly, unnatural grey. Her wide eyes were flooded with pure, unadulterated terror—this wasn't an act, it was the real deal.
