Chapter 319 Some Stuff
There was also a pair of women’s sunglasses, the lenses scratched in several places.
And then, of all things, a cell phone.
“I…” Claire tried to speak and nothing came out.
Her eyes went wide and round, and she didn’t even notice Eleven slip straight out of her grip
Zane caught Eleven before he could hit the ground.

Eleven gave his little wings a shake, drifted over toward the glass box in a slightly wobbly arc, and announced with obvious pride, “Mom, those weird things in there are exactly why I didn’t come back in time! Just look at how strange they all are!”
Claire knew exactly what she was looking at. Any one of those three objects would have been completely unthinkable anywhere in the Beast World.
Especially the pink cell phone, still in its case, a fluffy little rabbit charm dangling from it and a touchscreen to boot.
Modern items. Here, of all places.
A name shot through Claire’s mind like an arrow.
Wanda.
Bertie had once said that the first time he encountered Wanda, she had fallen straight out of the sky. Every detail of his account pointed to one conclusion-Wanda had transmigrated here.
So if there was no third transmigrator hiding somewhere in the Beast World, these belongings had to be Wanda’s.
She’d actually been here. In the eagle clan.
And she’d left all of this behind.
For a transmigrator, objects like these carried a meaning that couldn’t be replaced or recreated. The phone might be dead, the sunglasses scratched, the boots worn through, but they were still precious beyond
measure.
Claire couldn’t figure out why Wanda had kept them tucked away here of all places.
But looking at the carefully built wooden shelf and the glass boxes constructed to house them, it was clear Wanda had treasured these things deeply.
Claire was still turning everything over in her mind when Aurora’s voice came from behind her.
Aurora walked in while still talking. “Claire, so this is where you all ended up! Did you find Eleven? Oh, Eleven! You little troublemaker! Do you have any idea how long we’ve been looking for you?”
Davy had taken the younglings through every corner of the clan searching for Eleven, and before long the

whole clan had caught wind of it. The chief and Aurora split everyone into groups to search in different directions, which was how Aurora ended up here.
The sight of Eleven put Aurora’s nerves at ease, and she immediately sent the male beastfolk trailing beh her out to spread the news.
Claire was still reeling when Aurora stepped toward the glass boxes, and Claire grabbed her hand at once. “Aurora, where did all of this come from?”
Aurora glanced at the boxes and smiled. “Oh, those? That’s quite the story. A female who came through o clan a very long time ago left them here. She built this house herself.”
Claire looked around the room again. No wonder it had felt so familiar the moment she stepped inside, familiar enough that she’d nearly forgotten she was standing in the Beast World at all.
“Did she actually live here? Aurora, what was her name?” A name hovered right at the edge of Claire’s thoughts, but she held it back and waited for Aurora to say it first.
Sure enough, Aurora said it without missing a beat. “Her name was Wanda.”
The name hit Claire like a thunderclap. Wanda. The biological mother of the body she now inhabited.
And just like that, everything clicked into place.

Wanda’s mind as well. They were far more comfortable and far safer than any cave.
And these objects, every one of them a quiet testament to how extraordinary Wanda had been.
Claire certainly couldn’t have figured out how to make glass on her own.
When Bertie first told Claire that Wanda was her birth mother in this world, Claire hadn’t felt much of anything and had no desire to track her down. But now, everything had come to her on its own.
Was this what people meant when they talked about fate having its own designs?
Claire had never put much stock in fate, but even she couldn’t help feeling she’d been a little too hasty in brushing it off.
Her voice came out unsteady. “Aurora, what happened to Wanda in the end?”
Is Wanda really dead?
Aurora let out a slow sigh and shook her head, guilt and grief settling visibly across her face.
“Wanda’s fertility was extraordinary. She carried several litters of young one after another, and once word spread, clans came flooding in from every direction. She died in the fighting over her. Our clan failed to protect her, and that’s something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.”
Aurora pressed her hands over her face, overcome with grief.
Zane watched the shock written across Claire’s face, and something about it nagged at him.

They’d known for some time that Wanda was the birth mother of the body Claire now lived in, but Claire had never once mentioned wanting to find her.
Even now, all Claire showed was shock. There was none of the tearful joy of a child finding their mother. No weeping over Wanda’s belongings. No grief over Wanda’s death.
Claire wasn’t that kind of cold, unfeeling person.
Zane pushed the question down and kept quiet. He shushed Eleven gently and pulled him close.
From the look on Claire’s face when she first spotted those objects, that sudden, unguarded brightness in her eyes, it was clear she’d want them kept safe from harm.
