The noblewoman raised her hand, and someone behind her presented a black card. She spoke with contempt, "This is the betrothal gift. Two billion. Enough to solve the Lockwood Group’s urgent crisis. Remember, it must be Austin Lockwood’s biological daughter. If there’s any mistake, you’ll all have me to answer to!"
Rose Lowell was beaming. "Don’t you worry, Your Highness, don’t you worry. I was just wondering, when would you like to hold the wedding?"
The Princess sneered. "A wedding? Just registering the marriage is already a concession. Why would we hold a wedding? I’d find it humiliating. However..."
The Princess said meaningfully, "You see, my son fell ill as a child, so he’s always needed someone to look after him. Nannies, maids, and the like are outsiders, after all. So, I hope your daughter can take care of my son. Do you understand what I mean?"
Her son’s brain had been damaged by a fever when he was six, and his mental age had been stuck there ever since. But when it came to women, he was utterly unrestrained. The Princess didn’t mind. He was the Prince’s eldest son, after all, a man of noble status. What was wrong with him playing around with a few women?
The reason she’d set her sights on Estelle Lockwood was that once Estelle married into their family, she’d have no family of her own to back her up. Her son could toy with Estelle however he pleased, and she wouldn’t dare breathe a word of it to anyone.
The Princess said condescendingly, "Ms. Lowell, you wouldn’t be reluctant to part with your daughter, would you?"
A greedy glint flashed in Rose Lowell’s eyes.
’Two billion in exchange for Estelle Lockwood? What’s there to be reluctant about!’
’What kind of life did I live before, and what kind of life am I living now? Ever since that Jinx, Estelle Lockwood, returned home, the Lockwood Group has gone into a nosedive. This two billion is what Estelle owes us as compensation!’
"Of course not, of course not! I’m more than willing! For Estelle to be able to serve your son is her great fortune!"
Rose Lowell thought, her conscience clear, ’I’m doing this for Estelle’s own good. Nathaniel Sloan might be rich and powerful, but Mr. Reno is an aristocrat, royalty! Estelle will be a princess.’
’And Noelle can just make a small sacrifice and marry Nathaniel. That way, both sisters will have found a good match.’
’What a perfect mother I am. Who says I’m biased? Why, I’m even giving the position of Princess to my own daughter!’
Rose Lowell said gleefully, "Your Highness, rest assured. Estelle Lockwood will marry him, whether she wants to or not!"
Mr. Reno’s expression turned lecherous, and he giggled foolishly, looking as if he could hardly wait.
The corners of Noelle Lockwood’s lips curled up before she suppressed her triumphant smile.
After seeing the Princess off, Rose Lowell was beside herself with joy, pacing back and forth in the room. "This is wonderful, just wonderful! Austin, did you hear that? Two billion!"
Austin Lockwood hesitated. "We agreed too hastily. My biological daughter..."
"What, you can’t bear to part with her?!!!" Rose Lowell shrieked.
Noelle Lockwood’s eyes also filled with tears. "It’s normal for you to be reluctant, Dad. After all, Britain is so far away. But Dad, this is her best option! Right now, the Sloan Family is very unhappy with her. The daughter-in-law they really want is Miss Thea York. Estelle might have to get a divorce any day now."
"When that happens, she’ll be a divorcée with three children. What kind of good family could she marry into then? Mr. Reno is already her best choice."
"Exactly! See how sensible Noelle is!" Rose Lowell snorted.
If it were his biological daughter, of course Austin Lockwood wouldn’t be able to part with her! He wasn’t heartless like Rose Lowell, who looked forward to sending her ’biological daughter’ to her doom.
After all, his biological daughter was...
’Never mind. Hardly anyone knows the truth anyway. In the end, the one marrying Mr. Reno will definitely be Estelle Lockwood, not Noelle!’
...
Estelle Lockwood received a call from Stella York.
"Princess Avery? The Princess Consort from Britain?"
Estelle Lockwood narrowed her eyes.
’He was right. Specifically demanding ’Estelle Lockwood’ was actually different from demanding ’Austin Lockwood’s biological daughter’.’
’If the Prince wanted to torture me, he could have just named me directly. But instead, he said—Austin Lockwood’s daughter.’
’And Austin Lockwood’s biological daughter is...’ Estelle rested her chin in her hand. "Perhaps Austin Lockwood is certain that I don’t have any proof."
A smile touched Nathaniel Sloan’s eyes. "The director of the orphanage from back then has returned to Crestfall. Interested in paying her a visit?"
Back then, Rose Lowell had taken Noelle Lockwood home from that very orphanage.
The orphanage director, the fortune teller, the obstetricians Rose Lowell had been in contact with—all of them were insiders. Yet, over twenty years ago, they had all left Crestfall one after another. Only the orphanage director had returned for a few years in between.
Now, she had probably returned to Crestfall thinking that enough time had passed.
Estelle Lockwood blinked.
RING RING RING... Just then, her phone rang. It was Austin Lockwood.
"Estelle."
Austin Lockwood cleared his throat. "Come home when you have a moment. Your father has been thinking it over, and I feel we should hold a proper wedding banquet for you. After all, you are our biological daughter. What do you say?"
Estelle Lockwood’s eyebrow twitched. "Is that so? Then how does Chairman Lockwood plan to hold this wedding banquet?"
"Will it be at Lockwood Manor or at a hotel? How many guests does Chairman Lockwood plan to invite? Will everyone from the Lockwood Group be there, or just a small few? Will you be inviting reporters? Will it be announced in the papers? And as for the scale... it can’t be any less grand than Noelle Lockwood’s birthday party, can it?"
