Abigail
The birthday party wasn’t even that extravagant, yet Finnegan gazed at me like I had snatched the moon from the sky and hung it in the hall.
He had a rare, soft smile that curved his mouth, transforming his face into a boyish look that made my knees weak and my heart clench.
Barely an hour later, after the cake had been cut and Finnegan was feeding me a bite with chocolate smudged on my nose, his eyes crinkling with amusement, the toasts began.
Henry stepped up to the small stage with a microphone, grinning like the troublemaker he was. His bowtie was slightly askew, and I could see River glaring at it from across the room.
"Ladies and gentlemen, and especially the birthday boy," Henry began, raising his glass, his voice booming through the hall. "Most of you know Finnegan as the untouchable CEO. The Ice King—"
"Nobody calls me that," Finnegan grunted next to me while laughter rippled through the room.
"But this year..." Henry’s voice dropped to a serious tone.
"This year has been hell for him. We all know it. Family betrayal that would have broken lesser men, yet here he stands, stronger as always. I wish you much more happiness, man. Like a truckload and more. You deserve it. Thanks for always pulling through. You’re loved."
Henry held up his glass to Finnegan, and Finnegan held up his too, and both of them downed their drinks.
He raised his glass higher, the crystal catching the light. "To Finnegan, happy birthday, brother. May this year bring you the peace you’ve earned. And to Abigail, thank you for giving our friend back his light."
"Hear hear!" Annette yelled while everyone cheered, the sound rising like a wave, crashing over us.
Finnegan pulled me close and kissed my temple, his arm tight around my waist, his breath shaky against my hair. I could feel how touched he was.
"Thank you," he murmured against my ear, so only I could hear.
The live band began playing a slow and beautiful jazz song. Finnegan took my hand and led me to the dance floor, his palm warm against mine.
He pulled me flush against him, one hand settling on my lower back with possessive gentleness, the other holding mine against his chest.
We swayed gently under the lights, his heartbeat thumping against my palm where it rested over his heart.
"You planned all of this?" he murmured, voice low and full of wonder, his eyes searching mine.
"With a lot of help from Angel and River," I whispered, smiling up at him, totally trapped by the way the fairy lights reflected in his dark green eyes. "You deserve a day that’s just about you, you know."
He spun me slowly, making the world blur for a second before he drew me back in. The room faded, the guests, the music, the decorations, everyone faded until it was just us, moving together like we had been dancing together for lifetimes.
His hand stroked my back tenderly, drawing patterns through the silk of my dress. I rested my cheek against his chest, listening to his heartbeat.
Across the floor, I caught sight of Eric and Annette dancing. Now that was interesting.
His hands were low on her waist, her head tipped back to laugh at something he’d said. Eric said something else that made Annette laugh and lightly smack his chest, but she didn’t pull away. I smiled against Finnegan’s shirt.
