Finnegan
"Congratulations, sir, we’ve finally been able to resolve the fraud case," my lawyer said over the phone, sounding relieved.
Yeah, I was fucking relieved too. Devin had caused a hell of a mess, but it was getting resolved now.
We had won all the lawsuits against Wolfe Corp. The board was coming to terms with my blockhead of a brother using my identity to siphon millions from company funds.
It was a lot of money, and we would have to halt some projects at the Corp but it was better than nothing. Devin would not win, and that was enough for me.
"Well done. The legal team was really overworked this period. You’ll all be duly compensated,"
"Thanks, Mr. Wolfe, we’re glad to do our jobs,"
I leaned back in my study chair as the call ended. This had to be the first quiet weekend afternoon I’d had in weeks. My anchor, the one person keeping me afloat, was my Abigail.
I rubbed the bridge of my nose as the latest reports from my forensic accountants and legal team filled my computer screen.
Devin’s theft using my identity had been massive, but we had clawed most of it back.
The shell companies were frozen, transactions reversed where possible, and emergency press statements issued to stabilize our stock. The board was rattled, but Wolfe Corp would survive.
For the first time in weeks, things were looking up on the business front. The police were still hunting Devin like a ghost, but at least my company wasn’t collapsing around me.
Angel was in the living room, watching something on her tablet. I had been trying to give her space while staying close. She was a little less angry than she’d been a few days ago, and yesterday Abby and I had taken her for her first session with the therapist.
Things were looking up. My phone rang with a call from Abigail. I answered immediately.
"Hey, baby-"
Her broken sob cut me off and had me on my feet instantly. "Finn... Devin called me. He has Meemaw. He said an eye for an eye... a grandmother for a mother. I have twenty-four hours to find him or..."
Just when the world was finally starting to make sense, my brother struck again. This was a fucking mess. My slides hit the carpet as I strode to the door. "Where are you? I’ll come get you,"
"Connor’s driving me home right now," she cried. I endured the long fifty minutes of her drive home, trying to soothe her over the phone.
Fury and horror warred inside me. My own brother had gone after Abigail’s grandparents, the people who had raised her after he murdered her parents. I had men watching her Meemaw and Gramps, so how the hell had Devin gotten past them?
I immediately texted the head of security while on the call with Abigail. "What the fuck happened? You were supposed to have eyes on the Kellermans twenty-four-seven. How did Devin take them?"
"Oh, nothing much. Just the truth. That sweet little Angel might not actually be yours, and she could be Devin’s daughter. I thought she deserved to know where she really came from."
Rage exploded through me. I slammed my hand against the glass so hard the partition rattled. The guard tensed. Victoria flinched at the look on my face. That was why — that was why Angel had been so sad lately.
"You told her what?" My voice dropped to a deadly whisper. "How dare you? How fucking dare you look my daughter in the eye and tell her something that cruel? She’s been through hell because of you, and you still tried to break her?"
Victoria’s smirk faltered. I leaned closer, eyes locked on hers so she could see exactly how serious I was.
"You think you’ll survive prison after this? You think when you eventually walk out of here it’s over? No. No. I held back all these years because you were Angel’s mother. I let you keep some dignity for her sake. But now? Now that you’ve shown you will never be a mother to her, I’m done holding back."
I hissed. "I will show the world exactly what kind of bitch you really are. Every affair, every lie, every dirty deal you and my mother made. I will drag your name through the mud until there’s nothing left. You will die in here forgotten and hated, and I will fucking make sure of it."
Victoria’s face paled, and fear flashed in her eyes. She could see I wasn’t bluffing.
Abigail’s hand tightened on my arm, grounding me, but I wasn’t finished.
"You will help us find Devin," I continued. "You will reach out to him. You will give us whatever we need. Am I clear?"
