Chapter 263: The Discharge-1
Caleb POV
Clam
Five weeks later, the morning sun finally broke through the gray clouds. Nurse Linda walked into the NICU room, pushing a small rolling cart filled with discharge papers and a tiny, clean car seat. She smiled widely and began to applaud.
“Well, look at this day,” Linda said, her voice booming with joy. “Finally, your baby can go home with you guys!”
Bella let out a huge breath, tears immediately filling her eyes, “Is it really time?”
“It is really time,” Linda nodded, clapping her hands together. “He hit five pounds two ounces today. His lungs are clear, and his vitals are perfect. I have to applaud you, Bella. Staying here for the whole nine weeks, sleeping on that cot, never leaving his side… that is not easy with your busy businesses and schedules.”
Bella cut her off instantly, her voice firm and absolute. “Nothing is more important than my son.”
“I know, honey,” Linda smiled warmly, patting Bella’s arm. “You proved that every single day. You both did. Caleb, come over here and sign these papers.”
I stepped forward, my hands shaking slightly as I took the pen. “I’m signing. Thank you, Linda. For saving him.”
“He did the hard work,” Linda said, looking into the incubator one last time. “Now get him out of here before I start crying too.”
The next day we packed up our final belongings, the small room suddenly looking empty without our presence. I placed the infant car seat onto the hospital bed and carefully lifted Victor inside, tightening the small harness straps securely over his tiny shoulders.
Once he was fully strapped in, I picked up the car seat by its heavy plastic handle. With Victor safe inside the seat, we walked out of the room and down the main corridor of the ward.
The entire nursing staff lined the hallway. They clapped and cheered, waving goodbye to the little boy they had watched fight for his life every day. Bella walked beside me, crying openly as she thanked each nurse, hugging Linda tightly.
At the exit doors, Dr. Okafor was waiting with her hands in her coat pockets. She stepped forward, wrapping her arms around Bella in a long, emotional embrace. As I stood close by, holding the car seat handle, I heard her quiet whisper right into her ear.
“Please avoid pregnancy at all costs, Bella,” Dr. Okafor murmured, her voice deadly serious despite the happy occasion. “Your body cannot take another crisis like this one.”
Bella nodded against her shoulder, her expression turning incredibly focused. “Don’t worry, doctor. I will take up the pregnancy prevention procedure you recommended. We are completely done.”
Dr. Okafor pulled back, patting her cheek before offering me a firm handshake. “Take care of them, Caleb.”
“I will,” I promised.

We walked through the sliding automatic doors into the crisp afternoon air. I carried the car seat down the hospital steps toward our parked car, my heart pounding against my ribs. Victor was small-only five pounds two ounces-but he was screaming with a massive volume from the moment the cold air hit his face. He had not moderated his opinions about hunger or temperature at all.
When we reached the car, I opened the heavy back door. I lifted the entire car seat and clicked it securely into the safety base strapped tightly to the vehicle’s rear seat.
“Is he locked in?” Bella asked, leaning into the backseat to check the harness herself.
