Chapter 240: Another Surprise

Bella POV

Claim

It was a Tuesday at six in the morning. I stood in the bathroom and stared down at the little plastic stick on the counter.

Two bright pink lines. They were clear and unmistakable.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I reached over and picked up the white plastic pack of birth control pills. I counted the empty spaces. Every single pill was gone. I had taken every single one on time, every night, without missing a single day.

I looked back at the two pink lines. My hands started to shake. I gripped the cold edge of the white sink with both hands, my knuckles turning white.

This was my third pregnancy. It was completely unplanned. Grace had just turned two in the spring. She was barely walking steady on her feet, and she had just started sleeping through the night without crying. Now, I was looking at proof that we were about to do it all over again.

Suddenly, my legs felt like jelly. I could not stand up anymore. I slid down the front of the cabinet and sat right down on the cold floor, pulling my knees up to my chest.

The bathroom tile started to feel freezing under my bare feet. Then, I heard our bedroom door click open. Caleb’s heavy footsteps crossed the hallway.

“Bella?” His deep voice came through the wood. It was still rough with sleep. “You have been in there for a long time.”

I stayed quiet, and that silence must have worried him. The door opened a second later. Caleb stepped inside, already half-dressed for his morning run. His black hair was messy, and his grey eyes immediately scanned the small room.

Then, his gaze landed on the bathroom counter. He saw the plastic test.

He stopped moving completely.

I watched his face. When things got serious, he always hid his feelings first. Then, his face softened, and I could see how worried he was. He walked across the bathroom in two big steps and knelt down right in front of me. His large hands hovered near my knees, like he wanted to hold them.

“Are you okay?” he asked. His voice was barely a whisper.

“I don’t know yet,” I said honestly. “Caleb, look at the counter.”

He looked at the test again, his brow furrowing. “The birth control pills,” he murmured. “You have been taking them every night.”

“Every single night,” I whispered, pointing a shaking finger at the empty pack. “I never forgot one. Not even once. I don’t understand how this happened.”

Caleb looked down at his own hands, his fingers trembling slightly. He didn’t look away, but the color seemed to drain from his face.

He snt right down on the cold floor next to me, not caring about his clothes or his dignity. He lowered himself onto the lite and wrapped his long arm around my shoulders, pulling me close.

“Bella,” he said, his voice dropping very low. “I am scared.”

I blinked, looking at his sharp jawline. It was so rare for Caleb to say those words. He was the man who ran empires, the man who always knew exactly what to do next. To hear him admit that out loud made my chest tighten.

“I am scared too,” I confessed, leaning my head against his shoulder. “I am so happy, Caleb, but I am terrified. It is just so sudden. We finally got into a good routine with the kids.”

“I know,” he said, squeezing my arm. “I am not scared about the work, or the money, or the space. I am just scared for you. I love our family so much, Bella. The thought of anything happening to you, or to this baby… it makes my chest ache.”

“We will be careful,” I told him, turning my head to look into his grey eyes. “We will find the best doctors, just like before. But right now, we just have to breathe.”

“Okay,” Caleb said, and his voice finally went steady again. He pressed a warm kiss to the top of my hair. “We will breathe. Whatever this baby needs from us, we will give it.”

“She or he,” I smiled a little.

“She or he,” he agreed. His large hand found mine on the cold floor and held on tight.

“We will need a bigger car,” Caleb said suddenly, making me laugh.

“Caleb, we have enough cars,” I said, nudging him with my elbow.

“No, we need something very safe,” he insisted, his business brain turning on. “A large SUV. The highest safety rating possible. I will have my assistant look up models today.”

“Do not buy a car today,” I warned him, though it made my smile grow wider. “Let us talk to the doctor first.”

“I can do both,” he muttered, but his eyes were teasing.

“What are we going to tell Tom?” I asked, looking toward the open door. “He finally has his own room, and he loves being the big brother to Grace. Now there will be three of them.”

“Tom will be thrilled,” Caleb said. “He will probably try to teach the baby about dinosaurs before it can even sit up.”

“He definitely will,” I laughed.

Right then, the bathroom door creaked open a little more. Tom stood there in his green dinosaur pajamas The sleeves were too short for him now because he had just had a big growth spurt for his sixth birthday.

His black hair was sticking up in three different directions, and he was rubbing his sleepy eyes with one fist.

He looked down at the two of us sitting flat on the bathroom floor.

“Mummy? Daddy?” Tom asked, his voice high and super sleepy. “I heard you talking from the hallway. Why are you sitting on the floor? Are you playing a game without me?”

“Just thinking, buddy, said, stretching my arm out to him.
