Chapter 233: Sebastien Meets Caleb pt 2-1

Bella POV

I felt a sudden, sharp ache of sympathy and love in my chest. I reached across the table and lightly touched the back of his hand. “She is very real, Sebastien. And she is very loud. You will meet her very soon, I promise.”

“I would like that more than anything,” he said quietly, setting the phone down and wiping his eyes with a crisp white handkerchief.

He took a deep breath, folding his hands on the table. He looked at Caleb with a directness I now understood was just how he operated when he wanted an honest conversation.

“What is your intention toward my daughter?” he asked.

Caleb did not hesitate.

“To spend my life earning her trust,” he said, looking Sebastien dead in the eye. “Which I know I have not always deserved.”

The table was very quiet as Sebastien looked at him for a long moment. Finally, Sebastien nodded once a small smile appeared on his face.

“That’s good enough,” Sebastien said.

I picked up my water glass and said nothing but I felt something in my chest settle quietly into place.

A few minutes later, the waiter walked up to our table and handed us three large menus.

“Take a look and order whatever you like,” Sebastien said, waving his hand over the menu. “The bills are on me tonight.”

Caleb closed his menu immediately and shook his head. “No, Sebastien. Let me take care of the bill tonight, you are our guest.”

Sebastien frowned, his stubborn side coming out instantly. He set his menu down on the table with a firm click.

*Imagine me allowing my son to pay when I can easily pay,” Sebastien said, his voice loud and clear. “You are my son now, Caleb. I am certainly old enough to have a kid of your age. Let’s not argue about it. Order anything you want, the bills are on me.”

Caleb looked at me, a small smile playing on his lips, and realized it was a losing battle. He gave a short nod, accepting it. “Thank you, Sebastien.”

We looked through the options, and when the waiter returned, we placed our orders. I chose a light salmon dish with grilled vegetables. When the waiter took my menu, I looked up and smiled. “Thank you

so much.”

Sebastien watched the interaction, his eyes tracking the way I spoke to the staff. A small, knowing look appeared on his face.

“You have a very polite palette, Bella, Sebastien noticed, gesturing toward my choice of food. “Simple, refined, and healthy. You take care of yourself.”

“I try to,” I replied, feeling a bit warm under his observation.

The waiter returned a short time later, balancing three large plates on a silver tray. He set the grilled salmon in front of me, placed a thick steak in front of Caleb, and set a roasted chicken dish down for Sebastien.

“Enjoy your meal,” the waiter said with a polite bow before stepping away.

“Thank you,” I said, picking up my fork.

The aroma of the hot food filled the air, and the tension at the table completely disappeared as we all took our first bites.

Sebastien swallowed a piece of chicken, wiped his mouth with his napkin, and looked across the table at

“So,” Sebastien began, a sudden grin breaking across his face. “Tell me about Tom.”
