Chapter 230: The Night-2

Clarr

A few minutes passed in that quiet calmness, our fingers laced together as the night deepened. That was when I noticed how cold her hands were in mine. A small tremor ran through her arm, and I could feel how she was shivering a bit against the cool night breeze.

I looked down at our joined fingers, then tightened my grip slightly to rub my thumb over her skin, trying to bring some warmth back to her.

“You’re freezing, Bella,” I whispered, leaning in close so my breath brushed against her cheek. “It’s eleven o’clock. It’s time to go to bed.”

She looked up at me, the tension in her face softening just a little as I kept rubbing her hand. She didn’t argue. She just gave me a small, tired nod, keeping her fingers tightly locked in mine as she let me guide her up from the chair.

We stood up from our chairs on the terrace, our hands still locked together. The night air had turned cold, and a light wind rustled the leaves in the dark. I opened the heavy glass door with my free hand, and we stepped back inside the house, the warmth of the living room hitting us immediately.

I finally let go of her hand to lock the terrace door behind us, flipping the security latch into place. Bella walked ahead of me down the quiet hallway, her bare feet making no sound.

We moved past the stairs, and I stopped for a second to check the digital security panel on the wall. Every light was green. The house was completely locked down,

We walked up the stairs together in silence. When we reached the top landing, Bella turned left to check on the kids one last time.

I followed her into Tom’s room first. The room was dark, lit only by the green glow of his digital clock. Tom was fast asleep, buried under his dinosaur blankets with one arm hanging over the side of the mattress. Bella stepped up to his bed, pulled the blanket over his shoulder, and kissed the top of his head.

We crept out and walked across the hall into Grace’s nursery. Grace was sound asleep in her crib, breathing softly with her small fists curled up by her cheeks. The baby monitor on her dresser hummed quietly. Bella stood by the crib for a long moment, watching her chest rise and fall, before she finally turned around and nodded at me.

We walked into our master bedroom at the end of the hall, closing the door behind us. The digital clock on my nightstand showed it was exactly eleven o’clock.

Bella did not wait or hesitate. She walked right over to the side of the bed, her fingers reaching for the hem of her top. Slowly, she pulled it up and over her head, letting it drop to the floor. She unbuttoned her trousers, stepped out of them, and then removed her remaining undergarments until she was completely naked.

I stood by the edge of the bed, frozen, as I glanced at her body. Even after all this time, the sight of her completely took my breath away. My eyes traced the soft curves of her skin, and I felt a sudden, familiar heat flare up in my chest.

I cleared my throat loudly, trying to keep myself in check, and forced my eyes to look away for a brief second.

Bella noticed. A small, knowing smile tugged at the corner of her lips, but she did not say anything. She simply turned and walked straight into the master bathroom to wash away the stress of the day.
