Chapter 228: The Stalker-2

“The police are already en route,” the guard supervisor reported, checking his radio. “Because of his escape from the transport van yesterday, they flagged our address. They have four cruisers rushing here with lights on.”
Through the camera feed, I watched two of our plainclothes guards move like ghosts through the brush. They caught Webb completely off guard. When the guards stepped out from the thick trees, Webb jumped, nearly dropping his camera strap.
His face twisted in panic. He spun around, trying to scramble back toward the public road, but our guards quickly blocked his path, keeping their distance but cutting off any chance of escape.
“Don’t let him run,” I muttered, my hands gripping the back of the security officer’s chair.
Seconds later, the high-pitched wail of police sirens echoed down the long driveway, cutting through the quiet afternoon. Through the gate monitors, I watched three police cruisers screech to a halt right outside the estate gates. The doors flew open, and four uniform officers ran onto the property with their weapons drawn, moving with aggressive speed. They knew Webb was a dangerous fugitive who had already hospitalized a cop.
On the monitor, I watched the officers storm the treeline. Webb threw his good hand into the air, waving it wildly as he tried to explain himself, but the officers didn’t hesitate. One cop kicked the camera away into the mud, while the other two slammed Webb face-first against a tree trunk. They forced his arms behind his back, ignoring his screams of pain as they clicked the heavy metal handcuffs into place.
They dragged him out, his boots scraping against the gravel driveway, and shoved him violently into the back of a cruiser.
By six in the evening, my phone vibrated on the kitchen counter. I picked it up, read the screen, and looked up as Bella walked into the kitchen with the kids.
“Lena just texted,” I said, setting the phone down. “The police processed Marcus Webb, and the restraining order is officially filed by the court.”
“What did she send exactly?” Bella asked, leaning against the counter while Tom and Grace ran over to the play mat.
“Just the official police report number,” I replied, tapping my screen. “I’m forwarding the text to you now so you have it.”
Bella’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, looked at the message, and then looked up at me.
“Good.”
“You can relax now,” I told her, letting out a breath I felt like I had been holding all day. “When the alarm went off, I was terrified. That is why I radioed the guards and told them to keep you and the kids in the indoor pool area.”
“I know,” Bella said, her voice softening. “The guard told me Webb was on the property. I kept the kids busy so they wouldn’t notice.”
“The second the police drove away with him, I called the guards to bring you all back to the main house,” I

said. “I wanted you back where I could see you.”
“We are safe, Caleb,” she said gently, placing a hand on my arm. “He is gone.”

The heavy fear that had been sitting in my chest all afternoon finally lifted. I washed my hands at the sink, grabbed a knife, and looked at the family gathered in the room.
“I’m going to start making dinner now, said, pulling the ingredients toward me. “Let’s just have a completely ordinary evening. I am so deeply grateful for it.”
“Daddy,” Tom said, leaning over his plate with a serious frown. “A Diplodocus could definitely beat a Brachiosaurus in a fight.”
“Really?” I asked, setting a basket of bread on the table. “Why do you think so, buddy?”
