Chapter 212: Margaret Confronted-2

Richard laughed from his chair as I glanced up at him.

“Point of correction,” Richard said. “We never sold Bella to you. When the agreement was about to take place, we wanted Jade to get married to you. But your grandmother insisted on Bella. She said if it was not Bella, there would be no deal at all. We had no choice but to agree. So, that blame is not on us.”

I smiled at him. “Use that to pacify your cold heart if it pleases you,” I said then I turned my attention as I leaned forward, looking straight at her. “Margaret, I expected better from you. She was your sister’s child. Even if Richard never liked her, why couldn’t you show her love? Just look at it this way. Imagine my only sister, Diana, entrusted her child to me. Her child would be like my own. I would treat her child the exact same way I treat mine. I would love them, protect them, and make sure they never felt alone. But no, you did not do that. You chose to be wicked instead.”

Margaret flinched, but she did not look up.

“She was family,” I continued, my voice low and hard. “Your own blood. Your sister trusted you to protect her daughter, not to treat her like a secret shame or a piece of trash. Richard is a cold man, we all know that. But you were her aunt. You were the one who should have held her when she cried. You should have told her about her mother. Instead, you let her grow up in a house where she felt like an outsider every single day. How do you live with that?”

“You don’t understand,” Margaret whispered, her hands shaking. “Richard made the rules. It was his money, his house.”

“Stop blaming Richard,” I said. “A mother’s sister is supposed to offer a safe place. You could have whispered the truth to her when he wasn’t looking. You could have loved her in secret if you were so afraid of him. But you didn’t even try. You watched a little girl wonder why she didn’t fit in, and you kept your mouth shut to keep your own life comfortable. That is not weakness, Margaret. That is cruelty.”

Margaret looked down at the carpet. “She looked like Elaine every single day,” she said finally. Her voice had changed. The fake politeness was completely gone. Something underneath it sounded older and more worn. “Every single day I looked at her and saw my sister. And every single day it was-it was too

“That’s not an explanation,” I said. “That’s a confession.”

The room was very quiet. Richard said nothing from his armchair. He was a man who had long since stopped trying to explain his actions, settling instead into his small, bitter life.

I stood up.

“Bella is going to meet Sebastien Marchetti,” I said. “She is going to find out who she is and where she came from. She is going to do that with her husband and her children and the people who actually care about her. None of that will include either of you.”

I picked up my jacket from the arm of the chair. “I’m not asking for anything from you. I’m not threatening you. I’m just making sure you understand that it’s done. Whatever you thought you were holding-whatever power you imagined that information gave you-it’s gone. She knows everything, and she’s moving forward without you.”

paused and looked at them both. “And also, lest I forget, never in your life-either of you-come to my house and try to bully my wife again. The last time, Bella was merciful and allowed you to go scot-free. I am not Bella. The next time, I assure you that you will spend time in a cell with your beloved, precious daughter Jade.”

I walked toward the door. The hallway had photos on the wall. They were in a long row of matching frames. It was the kind of wall families use to show birthdays, holidays, and school pictures. I walked slower as I passed them./

There was Jade at five, Jade at ten, Jade at her graduation. Jade at a party in her twenties. Jade with Margaret, and Jade with Richard. There was only Jade across years of pictures.
