He stayed there, giving her the focused attention he reserved for the most important things. “Does she know I’m here?” he asked without turning.

“She might,” I said. “They think babies can sense people nearby.”

He processed this and leaned closer. “I’m still here, Grace, I haven’t gone anywhere.” He straightened up. “Is that good?”

“That’s very good, buddy.”

He nodded, satisfied, then frowned slightly. “Why does she have the wires?”

“They help the doctors make sure everything is working the right way.”

“Like a monitor?”

“Exactly like a monitor.”

He relaxed, the tension he’d been holding since he walked in finally releasing.

“She’s going to be okay,” I told him.

“I know,” he said, with the total confidence of a child who had decided there was no other alternative. “She’s a Black.” He looked up at me with those grey eyes.. “We’re tough.”

Diana made a sound beside me.

“Yeah,” I said, once I trusted my voice again. “We are

The hardest days were the middle ones. Not the crisis of the beginning or the progress of the end, but the days in between where Grace was stable but not ready. The trajectory was good, but the distance felt enormous. On those days, sitting beside the incubator, I felt the full weight of helplessness-an emotion l was never built to handle.

I couldn’t fix this. I couldn’t negotiate, strategize, or apply resources to change the pace. I could only be present. I could speak to her and hold her skin-to-skin when the nurses allowed, her impossibly small weight on my chest, and trust she was doing the work.

It was, fundamentally, out of my hands. I was learning to be in that place without letting it eat me alive. Slowly. Imperfectly.

Maria, a nurse who had been there since the first day, found me staring at the incubator with the expression of a man losing a private argument with himself.

“She’s doing well today,” Maria said, checking monitors. “Strong oxygen

levels.”

“I know. I’ve been watching.”

“How long have you been here today?”

“Since six.”

She didn’t comment. She finished her notes and then asked, “You know what I’ve noticed about the parents who do best in here?”

“What?”

“They stop waiting for the big moment,” she said. “They stop looking for the turning point. They find the small things instead. Today, it’s oxygen. Yesterday, it was her temperature. Before that, she turned toward your voice.” She nodded at Grace. “Those are the wins. That’s how she gets home-one small thing at a time.”

I looked at Grace, small and serious, breathing with the steady determination of someone who had decided she was going to do this. “One small thing at a time,” I repeated.

“That’s all it ever is,” Maria said.

I sat back and exhaled. I tried to look only at today. Strong oxygen. Good color. A certain grip. It was enough.

Bella sat beside me on a Thursday-her own recovery progressing fast, because she did everything fast. She looked at me, reading the unmanaged version of my face.

“You’re doing it again,” she said.

“What?”

“Trying to control something you can’t.”

“I’m just sitting here.”

“Your jaw is doing the thing.” She put her hand on my arm. “She’s strong, Caleb. Look at her.”

I looked. Grace was over four pounds now, steadier and more authoritative in her grip.”She’s strong like her mother,” I said.

Bella was quiet for a moment. “She has your stubbornness,” she said.

I looked at her. “She’s a few days old.”

“I can tell,” she said, and there was something warm in her voice\

We sat in a comfortable quiet for a while, watching Grace do the small important work of existing.

“Maya called this morning,” Bella said eventually.

“How is she?”

“Emotional. She cried, which she’ll deny if you ever bring it up.” She glanced at me. “She said she wants to come next week when Grace is more settled.”

“Good.” I paused. “Tom asked me this morning if Grace could share his room when she comes home.”

Bella turned to look at me. “He asked that?”

“He’s already decided she’ll be scared of the dark and he wants to be close in case she needs him.” I looked at Grace. “I told him she’d have her own room but we’d put them close together.”
