Chapter 137: The Trap Springs 2
Caleb pov
The reply came almost immediately: Secure. Feed active. Cole took the bait-first message received and replied to. She’s holding steady.
Good. She was holding but I wasn’t sure I was.
I leaned back in the chair, eyes fixed on the sleeping image of my son, and let the guilt and love and bone-deep fear settle over me like a second skin. Tomorrow I’d be the Winter King again-cold, calculating, ready to tear apart anyone who threatened my family.

Tonight, alone in the dark, I was just a man who’d once destroyed the only woman he’d ever loved… and who would burn the world down before he let it happen again. But first, I had to let her fight.
And that might just be the hardest thing I’d ever done.
The call came at 2:14 in the morning it was Lena’s voice: “They’re moving on Tom’s location. Three vehicles, six operatives. ETA in eleven minutes.”
I was already out of the chair. Diana was in the kitchen she’d been sleeping on the couch the last two nights, close to Tom, without anyone asking her to and she looked at me when I came through the door and read my expression before I said a word.
“They’re moving,” I said.
She stood up. “Good.”
This was the part we hadn’t told Bella. She knew the plan, the legal structure, the bait. She knew Cole had been monitored and that his communication to her had been traced and documented. What she didn’t know – what I hadn’t told her, because her being visibly gone was the entire reason Cole believed he could move.
The demand to Bella was the distraction but the real objective was Tom. Diana had found it buried in the account records – a payment to a private transport company few days ago, routes mapped out of the country, a window of twenty-four hours.
Cole didn’t want to negotiate indefinitely. He wanted a physical guarantee, a child who carried the Black bloodline was a more durable leverage than a woman who might, at any moment, change her mind.
He’d made one mistake. He’d used the same shell structure Forde had flagged for us, and Lena’s team had been watching it for hours.
When the vehicles moved, we were already waiting. Tom was not at the location Cole’s operatives were heading to.
He’d been moved hours ago, quietly, with Leon and a second officer, to an address only Lena and I had. He was asleep, safe, and completely unaware. The residential address Cole’s people were converging on was occupied by Lena’s team, a practiced protocol, and Diana and me.
Diana, beside me in the dark of the second-floor hallway, was running through something internal in a way I recognized from my own years of learned emotional shutdown.

“When they breach,” she said, very quietly, “the two by the service entrance are mine.”
“Diana”
“I know what I’m doing,” she said. “Twenty years, remember.”
I did remember. Lena’s voice in my earpiece: “First vehicle at the perimeter, thirty seconds.”
I texted Bella: They’re moving. Tom is safe, please stay where you are.
Three seconds later, her response: Copy. Team alerted. I’m coming.
I stared at the message.
Bella
I’m already in the car, Caleb. I’m not sitting in a safe house while our family is in danger.

I put the phone away because there was no time and she was already moving and that was, I thought, exactly who she had always been – the person who stayed, who came back, who did not sit in safe rooms while the people she loved needed her. The front door gave way twenty seconds later.
It was controlled chaos, which is the only kind of chaos that ends well. Lena’s team took the primary entry team in the front rooms. Diana moved with an intensity that I found alarming and deeply impressive, the service entrance operatives didn’t reach the stairs.
I handled the two who made it to the second floor landing, and by the time the emergency services arrived minutes later it was already over.
Cole’s six operatives were detained, disarmed, and in zip ties on the ground floor.
Cole himself had not come. I’d known he wouldn’t men like Cole sent people, they watched from a distance and arrived after the smoke cleared to claim outcomes.
He arrived at minutes past three, in a car that stopped one block short of the building, and he was halfway to the service entrance when Lena’s secondary team closed in on him from two directions and he stopped walking and understood, very clearly, that the evening had not gone the way he’d planned. I walked out to meet him.
Cole Black at fifty-eight looked like a photograph of my father with years of grievance Written over him. He looked at me then looked at Lena’s team. He looked at the building behind me and ran the math.
“Tom was never here,” I said.
Cole said nothing.
“The transaction records, the surveillance documentation, the communication to Bella, the corporate espionage through Forde, and tonight’s operation are all on record and in the hands of law enforcement.” I held his gaze. “My father cut you out. That was wrong, you could have taken him to court, contest the estate, used every legal avenue available to you – I won’t have fought it but you came after my son.”
Cole looked at me for a long moment. Then he said, quietly and with a certainty that moved through me: “Your father made enemies you’ve never heard of. Not just me. Men who owed him nothing and are owed everything. You’ve dismantled his empire very thoroughly, Caleb but not all of them will be as direct about

it as I was.”
“Is that a warning or a threat?”
“It’s a fact,” he said. “There are more like me.”

Lena’s team moved in and Cole went with them without resistance.I stood on the pavement and breathed the cold air for a moment, thinking of his final words.
