The Rose He Killed novel Chapter 146

Chapter 133: War Council-1

Caleb POV

By seven the next morning, the dining room table had been taken over.

Bella had been awake since before me I’d found her in the study at five, laptop open, three pages of handwritten notes beside it and a cold cup of coffee she’d forgotten about I think hours ago.

She’d looked up when I came in and said, “I have a framework,” and I’d made her fresh coffee and sat down and listened to her walk me through it, and by the time Tom woke up and the ordinary morning began on top of everything else, we had something to work with.

I called James, James called Lena and Bella called Diana.

Claim

Diana arrived at seven-thirty with croissants, which she has been doing for a few days now, and it always seemed to surprise everyone including her, judging by her expression when she put them on the table, like she’d made the decision in the bakery and was now only partially committed to it.

Tom took two immediately and informed her she should come every morning.

“I’ll consider it,” Diana said, and did not commit to it either way, but something around her eyes was softer than the day before.

We assembled in the study at nine, after Tom had been settled with Maya – two security officers, a private residential location and the apartment was clear and quiet.

Me. Bella. Diana. James. Lena. And Ethan Pierce, who Bella had called at six in the morning and who had arrived with the expression of a man who had a great deal of questions but had decided to save them.

“Thank you for coming,” Bella said, when everyone was settled.

Ethan looked at her. “You said Tom’s safety is implicated so I came immediately.”

There was nothing pointed in how I received that Ethan loved Tom, that was simply a fact I’d accommodated and Bella gave him a brief, warm nod before turning to the room.

She stood at the end of the table and walked us through everything.

Cole Black’s identity, Forde’s evidence, the 48-hour window, the demand. She laid it out the way she laid out a board presentation: When she finished, the room was quiet.

“He’s counting on one of two reactions,” she said. “Panic or compliance. We’re going to give him neither.”

Diana, from the end of the table, said: “What’s the play?”

Bella’s plan was wonderful, built from Cole’s assumptions about how we’d behave rather than from how we actually intended to.

Cole believed that my priority was protecting my family from spectacle, he believed that Bella, given sufficient pressure and an apparent way out, would prioritize Tom’s safety over the business asset being demanded. He believed the 48-hour window would produce compliance because Caleb Black did not, historically, ask for help.

Chapter 133 War Council-1

Claim

Bella had built the plan around every single one of those assumptions being wrong.

The legal piece was Ethan’s – Pierce Capital’s in-house team was already better than ours at the specific international jurisdiction issues involved in Cole’s claim, and Ethan had offered without being asked before she’d finished the sentence.

They would build a filing that not only contested Cole’s claim to the estate allocation but documented his years of activity, the surveillance campaign, the use of an employee intermediary for corporate espionage, and the explicit threat against a minor. If he moved legally, they were already ahead of him.

The evidence piece was Diana’s, and this was the part where I watched my sister’s expression shift in a way I hadn’t seen in the days we’d been in the same room- a focus that was almost, almost like relief.

All years of her file, organized and transferred to Lena’s team. Every surveillance record, every account trail, every contact she’d tracked. She walked us through it with the fluency of someone who had been carrying this alone and was finally, for the first time, setting it on a table where other people could help hold it.
