I thought adjusting would be hard, but I was wrong. Before the sun even spiffed across the windows, I was already up doing morning chores.

There wasn’t much like before, no heavy routine, just breakfast for the family.

I was plating toast when soft footsteps drifted in. I turned to see Sera, half-asleep, and I smiled.

“Good morning.”

She nodded, leaning on the counter, voice still thick with sleep.

“Coffee… or tea?” I asked.

“Tea, please.”

She dragged a chair out and slumped into it while I brewed. A quiet sigh slipped from her before she gave me a soft smile.

“You still remember everyone’s routine, what they like.”

“They’re my brothers and my dad. I can’t forget all that in just four years,” I replied, sliding her cup across with a wink. “Your order, ma’am.”

She bowed playfully, took a sip, and hummed.

“Just right.” She ran her fingers through her hair, studying me gently. “How are you holding up? You shouldn’t be moving around. I could’ve made breakfast.”

“I’m fine, Sera.” I sat across from her. “Really. You all need to stop pampering me.”

“We’re not,” she murmured then smirked. “Well, maybe a little. But you know they’ll ask you to take leave from work, right? Once H.O.W.L lifts the holiday, you won’t be resuming.”

I froze.

“What?”

“They’re going to tell you over breakfast. You need rest. Recovery.”

My head shook before my voice even caught up.

“Of course not. Why would I stay home and…”

The front door clicked and Roc stepped in, Sera’s ringing phone in hand.

“You’ve got a call.” She got up to take it. Roc muttered, “Persistent.”

Sera offered him an apologetic look.

“Sorry. I should answer,”

He waited, curious, but whoever was calling didn’t give her a second to speak.

Sera’s eyes widened, her expression shifting all at once. She slowiy lowered the phone.

“There was a killing outside H.O.W.L last night. Autopsy is probably needed.”

Her phone beeped again. She checked the screen and looked at me

“Holiday’s over, Snow.”

I stood, mind spinning at the audacity. Someone bold enough to kill outside H.O.W.L? What purpose? What message?

I was about to speak when bustles came from the hall.

Roc turned to see Eshan appears. He strode in, tension in his face.

“A prisoner made an allegation… against you me.” He swallowed. “It’s on the news.”
