The Monster at My Feet novel Chapter 28

"You have my blood running through your veins, Caspian.

"You're an irredeemable monster, exactly like me.

"When you finally find someone you desperately want to possess.

"You'll do exactly what I did.

"You'll destroy everything."

A blinding spike of pain drove itself straight through Caspian's temples.

His spine locked, and the metallic taste of blood flooded his mouth.

He snatched the signed documents off the table and stormed out without a backward glance.

At the door, he stopped, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper.

"I am nothing like you.

"At least I know I'm a psycho.

"Which is why I'll sever the rot at the root. I won't take a single step toward her."

He got back into the car.

Caspian pressed his fingers hard against his temples.

The migraine was sending kaleidoscopic flashes across his vision and churning his stomach with intense nausea.

He blindly fumbled for his aspirin and brought a pill to his lips.

Kendrick's curse echoed violently in his ears like a physical ringing.

He was right.

They were cut from the same cloth.

Ruthless, obsessive, sick bastards.

But he absolutely refused to become him. He would never—

Tap. Tap. Tap.

A soft knocking echoed against the window.

Before Caspian could swallow the pill, his eyes flew open. The words "Get out" were halfway up his throat before they choked out.

Outside the window, a familiar little face was peering in.

Even though he knew she couldn't see through the tint, Caspian instantly masked his expression.

He sat up straight and took a deep, shuddering breath.

The window glided down.

Sylvie offered him a bright, adorable smile. "Mr. Graves, what a coincidence.

"I dropped my stuff at the dorm, signed in for my seminar, and came right out.

"The hospital is super close to campus. I came to visit my brother, and I saw your car."

She tilted her head, her bright eyes locking onto Caspian's face, which was somehow even paler than before. She frowned in genuine concern.

"Are you not feeling well?"

She carried the platter, taking a second to artfully rearrange the sliced fruit to make it look flawless.

She checked the time.

Lawrence and his entourage would be arriving from the airport in exactly ten minutes.

Perfect timing.

She pushed the door open, her delicate face twisted into a mask of pure, anxious concern.

"Are you okay? I brought you some fruit."

Lucas was mindlessly scrolling on his phone. The second he saw her, his eyes lit up.

"I'm fine. They're discharging me today. What are you doing here?"

"I was so worried about you. I had to come see you. I keep feeling like this is all my fault," she whimpered, her voice wavering.

The tip of her cute little nose was slightly red, and her large, innocent eyes were entirely clear.

For a moment, Lucas couldn't even look away.

Before he could comfort her, Sylvie had already speared a piece of strawberry on a fork and held it right to his lips.

Lucas's entire face flushed scarlet.

At that exact second, Sylvie's fingers tightened on the plastic fork—

Without any warning, that familiar, chilling sensation of being watched washed over her spine.

He was back.
