Inside the car, the moment Sterling Hawthorne heard that Lydia Lansbury was being bullied, he reached for the door handle.
"I know you're anxious, but hold on a second."
The next moment, Elena Larkin reached out and stopped him.
Meeting the young man's puzzled look, Elena chuckled softly and reminded him. "Master Sterling, don't forget why you brought me to campus in the first place."
"You just want to know how the girl you like really feels about you. Right now is the perfect opportunity to test the waters."
It wasn't until they arrived at Kingsley University that Sterling told her what today's mission actually entailed.
He wanted to provoke the girl he liked and see if she would get jealous.
Initially, Elena didn't agree with the plan. Hiring someone to play a fake girlfriend to test a crush was a cheap and awful tactic.
If the girl actually liked him back, finding out the truth would only break her heart.
That was until Sterling revealed that he had confessed his feelings ninety-nine times, and she had rejected him every single time.
But after every rejection, the girl's eyes would well up with tears, as if she were hiding some unspeakable secret.
He guessed that perhaps the massive gap in their social standing made her feel insecure.
Or maybe she just didn't like him but was too afraid of his status to reject him completely.
So, he wanted to use Elena to force out her true feelings.
"Wait, you actually confessed ninety-nine times? What a hopeless romantic!"
For a few seconds, Elena was utterly speechless, staring at the young man with a newfound sense of awe.
Sterling flushed under her intense gaze and couldn't help but explain himself. "It sounds a bit exaggerated. It's really just a total of all the big and small confessions combined. A few of them were pretty casual, so they probably shouldn't even count."
Elena was speechless.
It didn't sound exaggerated at all.
To put it nicely, the guy was sincere, passionate, and possessed a rare, genuine heart.
To put it bluntly, he was utterly lovesick and beyond saving.
"But Lydia..."
"Which is exactly why you've confessed ninety-nine times and she still hasn't accepted. It just proves you don't understand women!"
Elena fired back casually, just as Sasha Sheridan's voice rang out from outside the car once more. "Sterling, are you listening? If you don't do something, more people are going to start bullying Lydia..."
Seeing that he was taking forever to get out of the car, Sasha found it a bit strange but continued to air her grievances anyway.
"You have no idea how awful Lorelei Lowell was being. Lydia was so upset she almost cried..."
Sasha's public complaining to Sterling had already drawn a crowd of onlookers.
If Kingsley University was a school for the elite, then Sterling was undoubtedly the king of that upper-crust pyramid.
The student body privately called him The Prince—a nickname that was equal parts teasing and sheer fact.
Because of this, his every move was heavily scrutinized. His endless confessions to the school belle were already legendary across campus; absolutely everyone knew about it.
Right now, the crowd eagerly speculated about how he would react to his beloved being bullied.
Lorelei, the girl who had dared to cross Lydia, was probably in for a brutal awakening!
