“Um… I’m sorry,” I stammer, gripping the strap of my bag tighter until my knuckles turn white. “I just wanted to um… get some of my textbooks and materials that were still left here in my old room. I have history next, and I didn’t want to miss marks. Damon…he told me
you were not around right now. I guess… I guess he misinformed me.”
Kai continues to stare at me in silence, his jaw clenched tight. He doesn’t say anything, and he doesn’t ease his harsh posture. I feel like
I’m being placed under a microscope.
The silence stretches on for too long, becoming completely unbearable.
“Okay,” I whisper, my voice cracking slightly. “I’ll just leave now.”
I take a tense step forward, attempting to sidestep his large frame so I can head straight for the front door. But before I can even pass his
shoulder, Kai moves. His large hand shoots out, grabbing my upper arm in a firm, unyielding grip.
He applies just enough pressure to pull me backward, forcing me to turn around and face him once again.
A sharp gasp of surprise escapes my lips. I look up at him, my blue eyes wide as our gazes clash for the second time. We just stand there,
frozen in the middle of the hallway, our breathing shallow.
“Is something wrong?” I ask.
Kai stares down at me deeply, his green eyes scanning every single line of my face. His gaze lingers on my cheeks.
“You have heavy under-eye bags,” he says, his voice losing a bit of its hardness, replaced by something rougher. “Have you been crying
these past four months?”
I stare up at him, my mouth opening slightly as his words sink in. He noticed. After four months of complete separation, the first thing he
focuses on is the physical evidence of my misery.
“Why are you asking me that? Why do you even care if I’ve been crying or not, Kai? You’re the one who walked away.”
Kai glares down at me, a look of deep frustration washing over his features. He lets out a sharp breath through his teeth, his grip on my arm tightening slightly as he pulls me a closer to his bare chest. The familiar scent of his skin washes over me, making my head spin.
“Because I-”
“Babe? You good? I’ve been waiting in bed for you.”
A new voice suddenly cuts through the silence.
I freeze instantly, my entire body turning to ice as I recognize the soft, sultry tone, Princess Rina. Prince Kai’s actual girlfriend and mate.

My heart shatters all over again, the pieces cutting deep into my chest. I immediately wrench my arm out of Kai’s grip, stumbling a step
backward to create distance between us. I turn my head slowly toward the source of the voice.
Rina is standing right by the frame of Kal’s master bedroom door. She is leaning against the door, wearing a piece of black lace lingerie that leaves nothing to the imagination. The material is completely see-through, the top barely covering the area around her nipples while
leaving the rest of her chest exposed, and the bottom is nothing more than a tiny string that doesn’t cover any part of her skin.
Embarrassment and pure humiliation washes over me. I suddenly feel completely small, dirty, and utterly out of place standing in this
apartment. I slowly turn my head to look back at Kai. He stands there, his expression instantly locking down into a cold, blank mask as he
stares back at me, saying absolutely nothing to defend himself or explain.
Oh goddess. The horrifying realization hits me like a blow.
I just walked into his private home while he was busy fucking his girlfriend.
Hot, burning tears sting the backs of my eyes, and I bite the inside of my cheek so hard I taste blood, desperately trying to hold them
back. I refuse to cry in front of them. I refuse to show her how much this is killing me.
Inside me I feel Wyndra’s anger. My fox is pacing the walls of my mind, her fur bristling with an intense, wild jealousy. We are both
burning alive from the inside out. I can feel the dangerous heat rising under my skin, and I know with absolute certainty that if I don’t
leave this apartment right this second, I will lose control and do something completely stupid, like shift and attack his mate.
When Rina sees me, she narrows her eyes, glaring at me with utter disgust as she takes a step toward me. “This wolfless tramp again? Do
you always stalk my man, or what? I’m going to fucking kill you for trying to disrupt our private time, you little-”
“It’s okay, Rina,” Kai cuts her off, his voice dead and flat. He steps directly into her line of sight, effectively blocking her from stepping
any closer to me. He keeps his back to her, his lifeless green eyes fixing onto mine. He looks at me as if I am a complete stranger. “She
was just leaving. Go, Lyra. And don’t you ever show up in my house unannounced again, or I’ll personally make sure you regret it.”
I look up at him one last time, the silence stretching between us like an empty desert. His words are like a blade to my throat, but I
swallow the pain down.
“I’m sorry…” I whisper, my voice barely audible.
Without waiting for another second, I turn around, and rush out of Kai’s apartment. I slam the heavy door shut behind me, the sound
echoing loudly through the penthouse corridor.
The moment my feet hit the privacy of the elevator, I let out a ragged sob. I’m glad that Damon is no longer waiting down in the main
lobby when the doors slide open, because the tears I have been desperately holding back finally break through completely.
They flood down my cheeks in hot, unstoppable rivers as I sprint out of the building and walk away from Kai’s quarters.
