The Lycan Prince’s Wolfless Slave (Academy Romance) novel Chapter 158

Chapter 158

The silence that follows is heavy, broken only by the sound of the building burning as the fire continues to roar. I turn to glare at Kai, ready to start the

argument again, but I stop.

He’s watching me. His gaze is focused on my body with careful attention. Before I can react, his hand reaches out and touches my left shoulder.

I wince, a small cry escapes from my lips as his fingers brush against the raw, burnt skin. It probably happened when I was trying to drag Daria, a level two student out of the burning bathtub, she passed out from the smoke so was harder to get her out.

This is why you shouldn’t play the hero,Kai says, his voice dropping to a low, rough growl. His eyes are dark, focused entirely on my injury.

Well, Pardon me for having the basic decency to help people in need, your highness.I snap, pulling away from his touch. I didn’t realize that as your slave, I wasn’t even allowed to have a heart. Or is that reserved for royalty?

Kai narrows his eyes at me. Do not use that sarcasm with me again, Lyra. Not while the roof is about to fall on your head.”

Then let it fall!I yell, my frustration finally boiling over into tears. I don’t care! Just let me go!

I turn limply, ignoring my shaky legs, and start to walk toward the hall entrance. I just want to get out. I want to find my friends. I want to be away from him and his confusing, suffocating presence.

But I don’t even make it three steps..

Suddenly, the world tilts. I gasp as I’m scooped up off my feet. One of Kai’s arms is behind my back, and the other is under my knees.

Put me down!I struggle against him, hitting his shoulders and trying to break free, but it doesn’t work. Not one bit. I can walk! Kai, put me down right

now!

He doesn’t answer. He doesn’t even look at me. He just holds me tighter against his chest and starts moving.

Everywhere is a blur of heat and falling debris. Kai moves like a man possessed. He doesn’t take the hallways, he smashes through doors and navigates the wreckage as if he can see through the solid walls of smoke.

We reach the main staircase, but it’s gone. A large section of the ceiling has collapsed, blocking the stairs with a pile of burning timber and stone. The only way down is probably to jump to the landing. Which is impossible considering how far away it is.

Or is it..?

Hold on,Kai grunts.

Before I can protest, he jumps. My stomach drops, and 1 bury my face in his neck, screaming as we plummet through the air. Kai twists his body midfall, turning so that he takes the brunt of the fall.

We hit the ground with a heavy thud.

Then I hear a loud pop. Oh no. Please be fine.

Kai lets out a sharp grunt of pain as his weight hits the stone floor. He rolls, keeping me shielded in his arms, until we come to a stop at the entrance.

Chapter 158

Kait 1 scramble out of his grip, my heart stopping. Kai, are you okay?

He’s lying on his back, his face contorted in a mask of pain. I look down at his legs and let out a horrified gasp. His right leg is twisted at an unnatural

angle. The bone hasn’t broken the sky, but it’s clearly shattered.

Tears start to blur my vision for real this time. Oh noKai, I’m so sorry. Youyou did that to protect me. Why did you do that?

I start to stutter, my hands hovering over him, not knowing where to touch. I..I’m so..sorry, I’m so sorry

Kai’s hand suddenly shoots up and grabs my face, pulling me down until I’m looking directly into his glowing green eyes. Despite the sweat and the dirt and the broken limb, he looks terrifyingly handsome.

Hey, he rasps, his thumb brushing over my cheek. Look at me. I’m fine.

Your leg-

It doesn’t hurt as much as it looks,he says in a steady voice. It’s already straightening back. I’m a Lycari, Lyra. At most, I’ll just shift and heal the rest in seconds. It’s nothing. So don’t feel bad, okay? Do not cry for me.

I nod slowly. I can see the muscles in his leg already twitching, the supernatural healing beginning its work.

I look around the lobby. The front doors are just a few yards away. I can hear the sounds of shouting outside.

Everyone is out,I whisper, a wave of relief washing over me. I can’t hear anyone else.

Good,Kai says. He reaches out, pulling me toward him. Now let’s get you out before this whole place becomes a tomb.

We hold onto each other, my arm around his waist and his arm draped over my shoulder, as we limp the final few yards toward the light. My shoulder is screaming, and he’s still using his good leg, but we move together, a strange, broken rhythm in the heart of the storm.

We burst through the front doors and into the cool night air.

Immediately, a roar of cheering erupts from the crowd gathered around the building. Students, teachers, and guards are all there, watching us walk out. When they see us emerge, they’re happy and excited that we made it.

I see Amara and Isolde running toward me, their faces wet with tears.

But then, my eyes shift.

Standing near the edge of the perimeter, surrounded by his Royal Guards, is King Geo.

He isn’t cheering. He is standing perfectly still with his arms crossed over his chest. He is staring at Kai with a look of such cold, calculated fury that my blood turns to ice. It’s the look of a man who just saw his son break a rule he was given.

Kai freezes beside me when he notices his father. His arm that was around me quickly drops as if a new fire just burned him. The cheering around us seems to fade into a dull hum..

The King’s gaze shifts from Kai to me, and for a second, I see the promise of something much worse than a fire.
