Gideon tried to apply a bit of force, but the moment he pulled away, Nora let out an even more agonizing wail.
He tried to pry her tightly clenched knuckles open with his hand, but she immediately let out a whimper of resistance, gripping even tighter and twisting his tie out of shape in the process.
The standoff lasted for a few minutes.
Left with no choice, Gideon sat down on the edge of the bed, letting Nora slump against his chest.
He looked down at the sobbing mess of a woman against his shirt and couldn't help but let out a deep sigh.
Married for three full years, he was used to her quietly standing off to the side, used to her never making any unreasonable demands. He had never seen Nora this difficult and bothersome.
There was absolutely no reasoning with a drunk woman.
Nora leaned against his shoulder, her crying gradually turning into intermittent hiccups. She lifted her tear-streaked face, flushed red from the liquor, and stared hazily at the man so close to her.
"Gideon..."
She called out to him groggily, her voice broken.
"Do you really... not remember me at all?"
Remember what?
He truly didn't know what he was supposed to remember.
There were too many things he needed to remember—corporate mergers, financial reports, Giselle's preferences. He didn't have the time to memorize every person he had ever helped.
She kept using this accusatory tone to demand payment for a romantic debt he had no idea when he had incurred.
Getting no response, Nora cried even harder. She grabbed his collar, tilted her head back, and stared straight at him with bloodshot eyes.
