The Love I Begged For Was Never Real novel Chapter 201

The lights in her line of sight began to sway and double. Nora slumped against the bar, her fingers wrapped around the cold glass.

Her reflection stared back at her from the curved surface of the glass.

A few stray strands of hair clung to the edge of her cheek. Her originally clear eyes were heavily bloodshot from the alcohol, revealing a deep sense of exhaustion and brokenness.

Nora stared at her reflection in the glass, her grip tightening slightly as a lump formed in her throat.

The resident singer in the small tavern was on stage strumming a guitar, singing an obscure, melancholic indie song. The husky voice echoed in the tight space.

The crisp clinking of glasses rang out from behind the bar.

Mrs. Higgins, the middle-aged tavern owner, wore a dark apron and held a clean white towel, looking down as she polished a freshly washed glass.

The owner paused her movements, her gaze landing on Nora with concern.

Ever since this young woman pushed the door open, she had downed several glasses of high-proof whiskey in a row.

Mrs. Higgins looked at the newly emptied glass in Nora's hand, then at her swaying body that seemed ready to topple off the barstool at any moment, and finally couldn't help but speak up.

"Sweetheart, you've had too much."

The owner put down the towel and glass, stepping closer behind the bar with a caring tone.

"It's pouring out there, and it's not safe for you to get drunk all alone. Do you need me to call your family? Or maybe have your husband come pick you up?"

Nora turned her head sluggishly, looking at the owner's worried face.

Family.

The word tumbled through her alcohol-numbed brain, bringing a sharp wave of heartache.
