A sleek Maybach glided to a halt. The driver stepped out, but before he could even reach for the rear handle, the door was pushed open from the inside.
Hans stepped out, his long legs hitting the pavement. He wore a black face mask and a dark baseball cap pulled low over his eyes. Hospitals were crawling with prying eyes, and the last thing he needed was to be recognized. If a tabloid photographer caught him here, wild rumors would be flooding the internet within half an hour.
He cast a casual glance around the quiet morning courtyard. Patients and their families moved about freely. Who would have guessed that the seemingly peaceful grounds were swarming with Franco's bodyguards, essentially placing the entire hospital under his absolute control?
Previously, Hans had mapped out a foolproof plan to take Petty away. Everything was ready.
But he hadn't anticipated Abacus still being alive.
And with the baby's critical condition and a bone marrow transplant looming, there was no way Petty would leave now.
So, Hans decided to turn a blind eye to the heavy security. If anything, Franco's men were an extra layer of protection for Petty and her son.
"Boss, Laura is completely mute now," a bodyguard murmured as he fell into step beside him.
Hans gave a low hum of acknowledgment. After Petty had left the hospital yesterday, Laura had spent hours screaming vicious curses at her. In response, Hans had ordered his men to slip a little something into Laura's IV, permanently destroying her vocal cords.
She had brought this entirely upon herself.
Sparing her miserable life was already a mercy she didn't deserve.
Arriving at Petty's room, Hans noticed the empty doorway and immediately guessed she wasn't inside. Pushing the door open confirmed his suspicion.
He pulled out his phone and dialed Aaron, only to find out she was visiting the baby.
Inside the intensive care unit.
"Will you let Mama hold you while you eat?"
Her mind flashed back to the New Year, when Franco had kept her confined at Misty Vale. While hiding in the attic waiting for the right moment to set the fire, she had noticed several sealed boxes. At the time, her only focus had been on Franco's return and her escape plan; she hadn't given the boxes a second thought.
If she had just opened them, she might have remembered everything sooner. She could have been reunited with her little boy months ago.
But none of that mattered anymore.
The only thing that mattered was that Abacus was alive, breathing, and calling her Mama.
The bottle emptied with a hollow slurping sound. Petty set it aside and took a soft wipe from the attending nurse, gently dabbing the corners of the baby's mouth.
Abacus obediently closed his eyes during the process. The sight made Petty's heart melt all over again. Unable to resist, she leaned down, pressing her forehead affectionately against his through the sterile barrier of her gown.
She closed her eyes, praying for the day there would be no protective layers between them. She desperately wanted to feel his warm skin against hers, to shower his chubby cheeks with kisses, and to hold him tightly in her arms until he fell asleep.
