The Flower That Grew from Ashes novel Chapter 64

"Someone planted bugs in my room."

Harriet's face instantly drained of color.

She clapped a hand over her mouth to stop herself from screaming.

"How... who would have the nerve!"

"When we go back inside, I need you to sweep the entire room for me," Annelise said, her tone terrifyingly calm. "Don't miss a single thing you think looks out of place."

"Yes, ma'am," Harriet nodded firmly, her palms slick with cold sweat.

That afternoon, taking advantage of the house being empty, Harriet used "spring cleaning" as an excuse to turn Annelise's bedroom completely upside down.

The results were chilling.

Aside from the voice recorder under the rug by the door.

She found a black micro-microphone, smaller than a grain of rice, hidden in the base of the bedside lamp.

Then, tucked away in the deepest corner of the wardrobe, disguised inside a cedar dehumidifier box, she found a pinhole camera.

The lens was pointed directly at the massive double bed in the center of the room.

Harriet wrapped all three devices in a piece of black velvet and set them in front of Annelise.

Staring at the cold electronic equipment—the very embodiment of extreme malice—Annelise felt chills shoot straight up her spine.

These were high-quality pieces, installed in angles so perfectly hidden that it was impossible they were placed on a whim.

It looked much more like an inescapable net, meticulously laid out long ago by a professional's hands.

How long had they been here?

A week? A month?

A year, or even longer?

How much of her so-called "married life" over the past four years had been lived under someone else's prying eyes and surveillance?

Who was it?

Who put them there?

Clarissa had the motive, but she likely didn't have the means to bypass the estate's heavy security system.
