The Flower That Grew from Ashes novel Chapter 178

That mug of hot cocoa left at her doorstep at three in the morning acted like a pebble tossed into a tranquil lake, sending out an invisible, subtle ripple between Annelise and Yves Judd.

During her second winter in Oslo, the dynamic between them underwent a wondrous shift.

This change didn't happen because either of them deliberately took a bold step closer.

Instead, it was the culmination of countless silent, perfectly timed gestures of kindness that gradually built an invisible, unbreakable bridge between them.

They began sharing small, effortless moments of coexistence.

When Annelise worked late in the back room of the flower shop, preparing wreaths for a wedding the next day, she only had to glance up to see the warm yellow glow of a drafting lamp spilling from his window.

And when Yves was up all night sketching in his studio until his eyes burned, all he had to do was look down to spot the slender silhouette still bustling behind the shop's glass display.

They were two people occupying their own spaces, occupied with their own lives.

Neither intruded on the other.

But they both drew comfort in knowing that within this quiet, historic building, just a few feet away, someone else was awake alongside them.

This kind of 'undisturbed companionship' brought Annelise far more peace than any grand romantic gesture ever could.

Their unspoken routine of 'drop it at the door and leave' gift exchanges also continued.

Sometimes, after Annelise finished a fresh batch of designs, she would take the most graceful stem, set it in a little ceramic vase, and leave it by the stairs leading up.

Other times, Yves would return from an errand and casually loop a bag containing a warm pastry he'd just picked up onto the shop's door handle.

Neither of them had ever uttered a direct 'thank you' or 'you're welcome' face-to-face.

But the appreciation was deeply understood.

Late one night in November, a rare and brutal blizzard hit Oslo.

Annelise had just wrapped up a public floral class at a community center on the outskirts of the city. By the time she made it back to her apartment building, it was past ten o'clock.

She stepped out of her van and braved the driving snow, walking up to the main entrance of her building. Reaching into her pocket, she prepared to pull out her keys.

Then, she froze.
