The Flower That Grew from Ashes novel Chapter 149

On a crisp morning in late January, Annelise received a call from her contractor, officially notifying her that the structural renovations of the shop were complete.

She hung up the phone, threw on her coat, and without even bothering to eat breakfast, hopped onto the first tram headed for Grünerløkka.

When she slid her key into the brand-new glass door and stepped into her space, she froze in her tracks.

The thin winter sunlight poured unimpeded through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, filling the entire front room with a bright, welcoming warmth.

The air still smelled faintly of the clean, pleasant scent of fresh timber and new paint.

Standing dead center in the room, she slowly took it all in.

The custom white wooden floral racks, built exactly to Yves's specifications, were all installed.

Sleek, pristine white lines stood rigidly in neat rows against the newly cleaned, deeply textured red brick wall.

It looked as though a towering, white forest had sprouted straight out of ancient, silent stone.

The elegantly curved oak counter gleamed softly in the sunlight, its surface sanded to a buttery-smooth finish.

In the floral studio in the back, the long row of stainless-steel sinks was fully plumbed, and all the wall outlets were properly mounted.

Overhead, the track lighting Yves had meticulously designed cast bright, focused beams straight down onto the workstation he had built just for her.

It looked like a miniature stage, waiting solely for her performance.

Everything was exactly as she had imagined.

Or rather, it was infinitely better.

As she stood there mesmerized, the front door was pushed open.

A rush of crisp winter air swept into the shop, accompanied by a familiar voice.

"How is it? Are you happy with it, neighbor?"

It was Yves.

He was wearing his eternal navy-blue canvas jacket, a few un-melted snowflakes clinging to his hair.

He was carrying a long object wrapped tightly in a dust cloth.

"What are you doing here?" Annelise asked, surprised.

"I came to hang your sign."

Yves placed the object on the counter and carefully peeled back the fabric.

A sign with crisp black lettering on a pure white background was revealed.

The design was breathtakingly simple.

The white board featured only a single English word. "Daisy."

The font wasn't a standard, digitized typeface pulled from a computer. The strokes had a slight, organic irregularity to them, like they had been hand-carved into the wood using traditional engraving techniques. It radiated an earthy, tactile warmth.
