"I didn't even get the chance to celebrate. I didn't even get to tell my husband."
"Because I was quickly informed that it was an ectopic pregnancy. My fallopian tube could rupture at any second, causing fatal internal bleeding. I needed an emergency operation immediately."
"And my surgeon was, once again, Hackett."
She paused.
The banquet hall was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Everyone held their breath, waiting for the most crucial, brutal plot twist of all.
Annelise slowly closed her eyes. Her long lashes fluttered like exhausted butterfly wings.
When she opened them again, a thin layer of tears finally glazed over her clear eyes.
"I experienced anesthesia awareness on that operating table."
"My body was paralyzed. I couldn't move, and I couldn't speak. But my brain and my hearing were entirely awake."
"I heard everything."
Her voice finally took on a slight tremor, a crack born from the unbearable weight of sheer agony.
"I heard the anesthesiologist, Logan Lewis, warn him that my vitals were perfectly stable and the ultrasound showed the gestational sac was exactly where it was supposed to be. It wasn't ectopic."
"I heard him reply, 'Proceed as planned.'"
"And then..."
She took a deep breath. The freezing air, laced with the metallic tang of blood, burned her lungs.
"I lay there, watching and listening, as my husband—the doctor sworn to save lives—used his cold scalpel to personally..."
She practically spat the last few words through gritted teeth.
"...abort the perfectly healthy baby I had prayed so desperately for."
