But if it did, would they be able to wear work uniforms like it did, stand in line, and enjoy meals like this too?
Acbi didn’t know,
But it hoped they would.
Benedict withdrew his gaze and picked up the serving ladle again.
Another Swarmborn had already stepped up to the serving window. It stood properly with its forelegs lightly folded together, patiently waiting for its lunch.
Benedict took a basket from the shelf and began filling it with vegetables.
“One standard meal,” he said. “Take your time eating. If it isn’t enough, you can always come back for more.”
He suddenly felt that getting along like this was actually pretty nice.
Fifth Military Headquarters, Communications Room.
A video was playing on the screen.
The footage was dark and shaky, as though it had been recorded with the crudest portable recording device imaginable.
The background showed the distinctive rock walls of a Swarmborn hive, coated in a layer of dark red secretion that glistened damply under the faint light.
At the center of the screen, a man was pinned to the ground beneath the massive legs of several giant insects.
The man wore the standard Fifth Military field uniform, with a small insignia pinned to his
chest.
It was Reuben.
He struggled and shouted something, but his voice was completely drowned out by the screeching of the Swarmborn.
The next second, a giant dark purple insect lunged out from the shadows. Its forelegs spread wide, each one longer than Reuben’s entire body.

The camera shook violently. Then the screen was flooded with crimson.

All that remained were shredded human body parts scattered across the cave floor. One severed arm still lay in a position that suggested it had been struggling only moments earlier, but there was no sign of life left.
A worker drone crawled over from the side, picked up the severed arm in its jaws, dragged it into the depths of the hive, and disappeared.
The video froze on a close-up of a dark crimson shell for several seconds before the screen went black.
The communications room remained silent for a long time.
No one spoke.
Only the faint blue glow lingering after the screen shut off flickered across their faces.
Crash! Someone slammed the cup in their hand onto the floor.
It was Gregory.
As he stood up, his chair slid backward several feet before crashing into the wall with a dull thud.
“Those idiots!” he exploded, his voice echoing through the communications room with fury that had clearly been building for a long time. “Are they animals? Do they even have brains? We’re allies! Allies! We gave them defensive maps, intelligence, coordination, everything they asked for, and this is how they repay us? They ripped him apart alive? They didn’t even let him finish a single sentence!”
No one dared answer.
Weston stood in the corner with his head lowered, his face as pale as paper.
He had been the one who sent Reuben.
Reuben had been his man.
Now there wasn’t even a body left.
Gregory breathed heavily as he paced back and forth a few times before stopping.
“Where did the video come from?”

The communications officer answered immediately. “The other side sent it through an encrypted channel. There was no message, no explanation, only this video.
He hesitated before lowering his voice even further. “It looked… like a warning”

“A warning?” Gregory turned to glare at him. “They’re warning us? What gives them the right to warn us? How much have we given them? Defensive maps, intelligence, routes, we’ve handed over the most valuable information in the entire kingdom, and now they turn around and bite us instead?”
Weston finally spoke. His voice was as dry as sandpaper scraping against stone. “Chief Gregory, now isn’t the time to get angry. Something must have happened on the Swarmborn side that we don’t know about. Before this, they agreed to send troops to destroy Planet A001. But now they’re saying they sent five separate teams, and every one of them disappeared…”
“You believe that?” Gregory interrupted.
Weston was silent for a moment.
“The Swarmborn don’t lie. They aren’t capable of it. If they said they sent them, then they definitely did. The question is…” He looked up at Gregory. “Where did those Swarmborn end up?”
Gregory frowned.
He sat back down and began tapping his fingers against the desk again.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
No one spoke in the communications room. Only the steady tapping echoed through the silence.
“Has anything unusual happened on Planet A001 lately?” he finally asked, his voice much calmer than before.

“No unusual activity?” he repeated.

If that many Swarmborn teams had really gone there, how could there possibly have been no unusual activity at all?
“No unusual activity,” the communications officer confirmed. “If the Swarmborn really sent five teams totaling nearly three thousand individuals, they would have left some kind of evidence no matter what. Signs of battle, bodies, wreckage, or energy fluctuations. Any one of those would have been impossible to erase completely. But according to our satellite surveillance, everything on Planet A001 has remained completely normal. The farm has continued operating as usual, and not even a single additional armed spaceship has appeared.
