"So this is where you work?" Juniper remarked. "It's so grand."

Stella smiled politely. "Is there something you needed to see me about, Miss Croft?"

Juniper pulled her gaze away from the office decor and focused on Stella.

"Miss Cameron, are you truly determined not to be with Joshua?"

Stella met her eyes evenly. "We aren't a good fit."

"Why do you say that?" Juniper pressed. "Are you worried about something?"

Instead of answering, Stella asked, "Did you come all the way here today just to ask me that?"

Juniper nodded. "If you have any concerns or if there's a misunderstanding between you and Joshua, you can tell me. If I know the truth, I can clear things up for you."

"Don't you have feelings for him?" Stella asked. "Why would you try to clear things up for him? Without me in the picture, you'd have a much better chance."

"Because if you actually like Joshua and are only staying away because of a misunderstanding, then... once that misunderstanding is resolved, you two will end up together anyway. It's just a matter of time.

"I might get a brief window of opportunity while you're gone, but in the end, I'd just be collateral damage in someone else's love story."

Juniper smiled, revealing an endearing flash of her canines.

"I have to assess the risks in relationships too, so I can make smart choices. I have no interest in being the unloved third wheel."

Stella was silent for a moment before she spoke again. "And what if I told you there are no concerns or misunderstandings between us? What would you do then?"
