The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 816

Chapter 816

Up ahead, Wally realized no one was following him. He glanced back and saw his sister already walking off in the distance.

He completely ignored Hayley, who was trailing behind Diana.

Wally frowned, then looked down at the extravial of serum in his hand.

Who gave him this?

Where did they go? When did they slip away?

He stood there, puzzled for a few seconds, then shook it off and turned back toward the lab.

Just some lowlevel researcher, nothing worth chasing down.

What mattered was the serum in his hand.

He could give them a proper lecture in the morning.

Hayley followed Diana through a series of winding corridors until they reached the far end of the underground facility.

Another locked door stood in front of them.

Diana swiped her card with a beep.

This door was nothing like the others Hayley had seen. The security level was on a completely different tier. After the card scan, a red infrared beam swept down over them.

A mechanical alert sounded overhead.

Ding! [Two individuals detected. Confirm entry?]

Two?

Diana frowned and glanced back.

There was no one there.

She looked up at the scanner again, annoyed. This junk system can’t even count right. Open the door!

The lock released.

Diana pushed forward, not noticing Hayley slipping in right behind her.

The moment Hayley stepped into the room, something inside her snapped tight, like a thread pulled straight through her chest.

She could feel Ruby. Her heart started pounding wildly.

Aaah!

A hoarse, broken scream came from the room next door.

Diana laughed, bright and cruel, and shoved the door open. Enjoying yourself, huh?

The second the door opened, a stench hit Hayley so hard that it made her stomach twist.

At the center of the room, a woman was strapped to an experimental table.

Her body was covered in writhing maggots and crawling rats. Every inch of her, except her face, was a mess of injuries: whip marks, handprints, and deep bruises from blunt force. The maggots and rats gnawed at her flesh, burrowing into open, bleeding

wounds.

Ruby hung there, head lowered, her whole body trembling in pain.

Hayley froze.

Guess you got lucky,Diana said as she strutted closer. I was planning to bring that manager from District One over tonight, let him have his fun with you. Too bad he went down. And there’s not another man in this entire base worth using. Letting any of them touch you would be doing you a favor. You’re only fit for trash.

Diana closed in, smug and satisfied.

Just as she stepped within reach, Ruby suddenly lifted her head. She spat a mouthful of maggots straight at Diana.

Argh!

Diana didn’t dodge in time, and the filth hit her full on. She screamed, stumbling back in horror.

Ruby burst out laughing. Even exhausted and broken, something fierce flashed in her eyes.

Diana, as long as I’m still breathing, you’ll always be nothing but filth in my eyes. You’ll never beat me. Not in this life!

Diana’s face twisted with rage. She glared at Ruby, murder blazing in her eyes.

You want to die? You really think I won’t kill you?

Ruby saw the killing intent in her expression and was about to shout for help when her gaze suddenly caught on someone standing behind Diana.

Her presence should’ve been invisible. And yet, somehow, Ruby noticed her instantly.

Ruby’s body went rigid, disbelief flooding her face.
