Someone like Hayley could tell right away the old man was talking big and saying nothing. The real power, the one actually in charge, was being kept out of sight.

The question she had asked, regarding who had the authority to choose, was the core of it.

Whoever got to pick was the real boss. The ones being picked meant nothing.

The old man looked at her and said, “They’ll be selected by all S-level members within our core.”

S-level.

So it really was a tightly ranked system. A, B, and C were probably just regular members. S-level was the real inner circle.

Hayley was about to press further about the Academy when the man cut in.

“I’ve said enough. Now it’s your turn.”

“Fine.” Hayley shrugged. “I’m multi-gifted.”

“How many?”

“You can count for yourselves.”

The man fell silent, completely at a loss.

Just then, a voice came from behind, arrogant and edged with impatience.

“Is she here yet?”

A woman stepped in from the back, dressed nothing like the others. Her figure was impossible to miss, curves sharp and defined. She wore a fitted skirt, a white blouse with the top three buttons undone, and

high heels that clicked against the floor as she walked in with an easy, swaying stride.

The moment she entered, everyone lowered their heads.

“Well? Did you people check properly? Is this so-called multi-Gifted person real? How many abilities does she have? What are they?”

Her voice carried a clear note of disbelief.

“Let me make this clear. If you dragged me here without confirming anything, if you’re wasting my time, you’re all done for.”

“Ma’am, the subject is here. We can run the test again,” the old man said carefully.

She swept a look over them, openly annoyed. “Run it again? You still need me to check? That just means you didn’t do it right the first time! What exactly are you people doing?”

“It’s not that. We only just received the results and informed you immediately. The situation’s unusual.

We weren’t sure how to verify it,” the old man said, clearly caught in a bind.

“Enough!” Her voice snapped like a whip.

The old man hadn’t expected S048 to be the one sent. She was the most difficult one in the Academy, with the worst temper of them all.

There were barely 50 people at the top of the Sovereign Academy, and most of them carried themselves well. When they came through here, they never made things difficult.

Except her.

Everyone knew S048 was trouble. She was ill-tempered, unpredictable, and a nightmare to deal with.

She looked over the room with open disdain, her chin slightly lifted. “Which one is it? Step forward. Show me all your gifts. If you’re lying to me, you’re dead.”

As her words fell, the crowd immediately pulled back, leaving Hayley and Winona standing in the middle. The woman, still frowning, looked at Hayley, and suddenly froze. Her eyes widened, disbelief flashing across her face. “Ruby!”

Hayley was genuinely surprised to hear the name. “You know Aunt Ruby?”

The woman snapped out of it, staring at Hayley for a long moment before striding straight toward her, her excitement rising fast.

“Ruby is your aunt? Where is she now? Is she still alive?”

Hayley watched her, a slight frown forming.

That excitement didn’t look like concern. It looked more like someone checking whether an enemy was still breathing.

“Who are you?” Hayley asked.
