Chapter 704

After saying that, Kieran turned and walked back toward his quarters.

He had rejected Hayley again.

“Why’s that old man so stubborn? There’s a better life outside, and he still won’t go,” Winona said

Hayley smiled and looked at her. “If someone told you there’s a place even better than where we are now, safer, richer, with no zombies at all, would you go?”

Winona shook her head. “No. Even if it’s real, I wouldn’t.”

Exactly.” Hayley tapped her lightly on the head. “He made the same choice. There’s nothing wrong with it. Even if somewhere else is better, not everyone’s willing to leave what they’re used to. This is their

comfort zone.

“So what now, boss?” Griffin walked up beside her. “We can’t convince them, and we can’t take them by

force.”

“Then we leave it.” Hayley’s gaze drifted toward the inner camp ahead. “I just want a look inside that

place.”

She had to see it for herself.

By evening, smoke rose from every corner of the outer camp as people started cooking.

Their homes were rough, built from timber and sun-dried mud bricks. The bricks were shaped from

packed earth and left to harden under the sun, simple but sturdy enough to stand.

Aside from the inner camp, which still had pre-apocalypse buildings with a modem feel, everything out here looked like something from a much older time, made of wood, dirt, and whatever people could piece together.

As for food, most of them had boiled wild greens and fish.

Salt was the only seasoning. Hayley even spotted pre-apocalypse packets of it. They were probably handed out by the inner camp

Life here was crude and bare, but strangely calm. At least it beat the hail out of the bases outside, where people tumed on each other just to survive

“Captain Gorgeous, are we eating? Griffin asked

“Yeah Lat’s eat. Break out the stew

heavy with meat and fat, with chunks of vegetables softening in the broth. The moment a few more fresh ingredients hit the pot, the aroma deepened, instantly drawing a crowd.

“Whoa, that smells amazing.”

“What is that?”

“That’s camp stew!”

People turned all at once.

The rich scent of oil and spices drifted through the air, cutting straight through the bland smell of boiled

greens.

Everyone eating plain vegetables and fish found themselves staring, their mouths watering.

Laurel and Felix sat among them, feeling the weight of those looks.

They knew that feeling. They had been the same way before.

Now, they were the ones eating.

Griffin laid out the ingredients, and the group dug in while everything was still steaming hot.

Miranda came hurrying over, holding her bowl. “You guys eat like this every day?”

Her eyes locked onto the pot, barely blinking. The stew was heavy with meat and fat, thick and satisfying.

“I told you already. This is normal for us out there,” Laurel said.

Miranda’s resolve cracked on the spot. She crouched down in front of them. “Take me with you. I’ll go.”

“Alright. You’re in,” Hayley said.

“Yes!” Miranda lit up, then immediately looked back at the pot. “Can I have some?”

“Go ahead.”

Miranda didn’t even reach for the food first. She grabbed a ladle and scooped up a full spoonful of the rich broth, pouring it straight over her rice.
