The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 679

Chapter 679

Hayley opened her meal.

Tonight’s spread was roast pork, carved chicken, and a hearty beef stew, with sides of sautéed gre garlic green beans, and a strip of beef jerky on the side, z

Ever since Haylight League was established, her employee meals had taken a sharp turn for the bem

Back then, it was either Leonard cooking or throwing together quick soups and instant meals. Now, had actual chefs from before the apocalypse running the kitchen.

Every day, there were hot, well-balanced meals with real flavor, the kind of food that made your mout water before you even took a bite.

The days when Derek and his crew survived on vegetable soup and a slice of bread felt like somethin from a lifetime ago.

Everyone in Haylight League had long since moved past worrying about food.

Still, eating like this every single day still shocked people who weren’t used to it.

Scott and Sawyer took the boxed meals Hayley handed out. The moment they looked inside, their eyes up.

Sawyer just stared at his food, stunned.

Following Scott, he had already been living better than most people at Tomorrow Base. Even then, he had never seen a meal like this.

Meat Actual meat.

And this much of it!

At Tomorrow Base, even core members got meat only once every three days. At least it wasn’t the kind the lower ranks were forced to eat, but still, it was scarce.

And now in front of him, there was pork, chicken, and beef. His eyes were practically locked in place.

How could their living standards be this high? It was a thousand times better than anything he had ever

had.

Scott looked down at the meal as well, a flicker of surprise passing through his usually calm gaze.

Nothing Hayley handed out was ever ordinary.

Off to the side, Felix’s group was staring just as hard.

“That smells amazing

“They’re eating meat?”

There’s chicken, too. And beef. And vegetables!”

They stared at the open containers, breathing in the drifting scent, swallowing over and over.

This was the apocalypse. How were these people eating like this?

They had come from a base deep in the canyon, where life had practically regressed to hunting and foraging. On bad days, they dug up wild plants or chewed tree bark. On better days, maybe they had

And this. This looked like something out of a dream.

“How are they eating this well?”

That’s insane…”

“I want some.”

I’m starving

They kept swallowing, unable to look away, when suddenly, a few dry bread rolls and packets of pickled vegetables were tossed over.

Felix caught them right away. He looked up at Hayley. “Where are our boxed meals?”

Hayley glanced at him. “Do you think you’ve earned it?”

The four of them froze, their words dying in their throats.

If they hadn’t worked that afternoon, Hayley wouldn’t have even given them the dry rolls.

None of them dared argue. They quickly gathered together, split the bread, and ate it with the pickles.

Right next to them, people were eating meat and hot meals. Meanwhile, they sat there chewing dry bread, living off the smell alone.

It was torture.

After dinner, Hayley pulled out her comms and tried to reach someone outside. There was no signal.

She put it away.

That was when she heard moaning and scratching at the windows. Outside, the castle was completely surrounded by zombies.

The moon hung high overhead, and in the night, the zombies were sharper, faster, more aware. They clawed at the walls and slammed into doors and windows.

Raarh

More than a dozen zombies threw themselves against the heavy iron gate. Their claws screeched acroes the surface, tearing through the once-smooth metal, leaving deep gouges as shards flaked off and clattered to the ground
