Chapter 671
“No problem.”
Hayley agreed without hesitation.
Across from her, Scott lowered his gaze, a soft, warm smile settling on his pale face.
Hayley returned the smile just as easily. The two of them looked like old friends who had always gotten along and had each other’s backs.
It was as if nothing had ever happened between them.
Right then, Winona, sitting beside Hayley, suddenly broke into a violent coughing fit.
“Cough, cough, cough! Cough, cough!”
She clamped a hand over her mouth. Her thin body shook with every cough, and a trace of blood began to seep from the corner of her lips.
“What’s wrong?” Hayley turned to her.
After coughing up blood, Winona quickly covered her mouth tighter, afraid anyone might notice she was hurt.” I’m fine.”
In the apocalypse, being sick or injured was basically a crime. It got you abandoned, or worse, eaten.
Winona didn’t dare say more. She endured it like a stray kitten, stubbornly silent, pretending she was okay.
“She’s got internal injuries. Probably got hit by a car and suffered internal bleeding,” Griffin said.
“I’m really fine. Just… My mouth’s messed up,” Winona hurried to explain, lowering her head and covering her mouth even tighter.
When Hayley saw this, she let her mind slip into the system shop interface and opened the medicine tab.
She was about to buy an emergency pill when something new caught her eye.
Detox pill.
[Detox Pill: Removes toxins caused by impurities in zombie crystal cores.
[Price: 1 point.]
Nice.
Without a second thought, Hayley bought 1,000 of them.
These were cheap and useful. She could hand one out to every Gifted member back at her base later.
Her evolution serum already had very few impurities and barely any side effects, but if people took too much, it still added up over time. This would fix that. 2
After finishing her purchases, she looked at Winona, who was still quietly holding back coughs, and pulled out an emergency pill from her pocket.
“Take it.”
Winona heard her and looked at what Hayley was offering.

“It’s not poisoned,” Hayley said.
Like a wary little kitten, Winona cautiously freed one hand and took the pill.
She hesitated for a full half minute.
She was obviously very careful.
After thinking it over, Winona finally swallowed the pill. It dissolved the moment it touched her tongue.
Her heart pounded with unease.
She didn’t have parents anymore. Just an uncle, the man who had tried to grab her today. He planned to trade her for food.
A kid like her, alone in the apocalypse, was no different from a stray kitten without a mother.
Even when she got hit by a car and harassed by others, she didn’t dare make a sound.
If she were to die, she figured she would probably just find some empty patch of bushes and lie down quietly.
She just hoped she wouldn’t get eaten by zombies or people.
Winona clutched her aching stomach. After a short while, warmth began to spread through her body.
The sharp pain in her abdomen faded. The bones that had been injured from the impact stopped hurting.
Even her strength started to come back.
When Scott saw her color return so quickly and her body visibly recovering, his eyes lit up.
He glanced at the pill Hayley had given her, a flicker of surprise flashing through his face. His heartbeat skipped, then picked up.
When the pain completely disappeared, Winona looked at Hayley in shock.
Hayley didn’t bother explaining. “Are you hungry?”
“I had a cracker yesterday afternoon. I’m still okay,” Winona said.
