Chapter 643
“Yeah.”
Hayley slipped a hand into her backpack. When she pulled it back out, a chocolate bar appeared in front of the woman.
The woman’s eyes instantly lit up.
Chocolate!
It was sweet, rich, and full of fat and sugar. It was the kind of high-energy food people used to take for granted.
She hadn’t seen something like that in years. For a moment, it looked as if she might leap forward, snatch it, and stuff it straight into her shirt.
“Alright,” she blurted. “Ask whatever you want. I’ll tell you everything.”
“How many of you are there?”
“Fifteen.”
“The guy talking earlier, is he your leader?”
“Yeah. His name’s Warren Burgess. Used to be the general manager at a real estate office on the seventh floor.”
“You’ve been living here the whole time?”
The woman’s eyes stayed locked on the chocolate bar. “Yeah.”
“For three years? What have you been eating and drinking?”
This time she looked up sharply, her expression suddenly guarded.
She wanted the food, sure, but she wasn’t stupid.
That question was getting into the core of their group’s supphes. If these outsiders learned too much, who knew if they would decide to take it all?
Hayley quietly added another chocolate bar.
“We grow some of our own food,” the woman said immediately. “There’s a convenience store and two fast food places downstairs. When everything started, we gathered whatever supplies we could. There were potatoes and some bean sprouts. We saved a few and planted them. We’ve been living off that ever since.”
“How do you grow anything? Where did you get soil?” Hayley pressed.
“Every office had a few potted plants. We collected all the pots and used the soil from those.”
“Arid water?”
The woman looked at Hayley and tilted her chin slightly: “Add another bar.”
Instead, Hayley placed two more chocolate bars in fruit of her.

These people had all been employees in the building before everything collapsed. There were 15 survivors in total. When the outbreak hit, they had gotten trapped inside the mall. With so few people, the supplies they gathered early on had managed to keep them alive.
Judging by their situation, they weren’t exactly starving either.
The woman grabbed the chocolate bars, her enthusiasm growing instantly.
“There’s a lot more going on here,” she said eagerly. “I can tell you everything. How about one more chocolate bar?”
Hayley studied her for a moment, mildly interested.
“Go ahead.”
The woman immediately plopped down cross-legged in front of her and started talking like someone dumping out a box of
secrets.
“Let’s start with Jasmine, the one who brought you water.
“She used to be the art director at a company on the 15th floor. Same company Warren worked at. People said they were dating before everything went to hell. But after the outbreak, when everyone ended up hiding here together, Jasmine stopped letting Warren touch her and even insisted on breaking up with him.
“I think she’s crazy. The world’s already fallen apart, and she’s still playing hard to get with her own boyfriend. If she didn’t have that water ability, Warren would’ve kicked her out a long time ago.
“And let me tell you something else,” the woman continued, lowering her voice with a sneer. “That Jasmine acts quiet and distant like she’s above everyone, but she’s got a way of pulling men in.
“She’s got Warren wrapped around her finger, and a bunch of the other guys here, too. Donnie and Charlie, those two brothers, even got into a fight over her. Theo and Larry have both snuck over to her room at night, bringing her things.”
