Chapter 563
By now, their supplies had dwindled to instant hoodles, pickled vegetables, and some jerky. Even the canned ham had gone bad.
Marvin had tried to teach them to grow crops on the roof, but the weather over the past two years had been brutal. Nothing
survived.
And now, right across from them, someone was eating hot barbecue ribs, beef, eggs, and fresh vegetables.
How was that even possible?
The world had ended. Who still ate like that?
They all stared at Hayley’s lunch like it was a miracle. If they couldn’t eat it, at least they could look.
Then, Trina came back out. She sniffed the air. “What smells so good?”
“They’re eating,” Andrew said quietly.
Trina spotted the food in Hayley’s hands immediately. Her eyes lit up.
“Are they seriously not sharing?” she said.
Sydney and the others looked at her.
Share? With what logic?
“You guys saved them, didn’t you?” Trina’s gaze sharpened. “Go ask. They owe you!”
“But…”
“No buts! You dragged us into this mess. The least you can do is get something back. This is your chance to make up for it. Go!”
She folded her arms.
Sydney and Andrew exchanged a look. Reluctantly, they stood and walked over.
“Um… Miss…”
“Ask for more!” Trina shouted from behind them. “They owe us!”
Hayley glanced up at the two teenagers standing awkwardly in front of her. You want some?”
They looked at each other again, then nodded.
“Then sit.”
She set down a full container in front of them. Enough for two, maybe three people.
Their eyes widened, and they instinctively bent to grab it.
“Sit and eat. Don’t take it back,” Hayley said.
They hesitated.
“If you don’t start now,” she went on, “I’ll take it away, and nobody gets any.”
That did it. The two sat down and started eating.
Behind them, Trina stormed over.
“You have no shame!” she snapped at the two of them.

“Oh? And you do?” Hayley’s voice cut in, cool and sharp.
She looked up at the pretty girl calmly.
“You’re the one who wanted it. You sent them over to ask. That’s your big moral high ground? What trouble did they cause you? The trouble of letting you smell something you can’t eat?”
She leaned back slightly.
“They had a reason to come ask. You? What’s yours? Because you’ve got the loudest mouth? Because you think you’re entitled?”
Her comeback was brutal.
Hayley didn’t care if they were 17 or 70. If they started it, she would finish it. No special treatment.
Trina’s face flushed red. Her eyes glistened with anger.
She glared at Hayley, something ugly flashing through her expression, then turned and stormed off, covering her mouth.
“Trina!” Andrew and Sydney both called out.
“Walk away, and you don’t get any,” Hayley said lightly.
Hearing that, the two froze in place.
They looked toward where Trina had run. The others were already gathering around her. Then, they looked down at the food in their hands.
Sydney swallowed a bite and glanced up at Hayley. Her eyes were shining. She gave Hayley a small, awed thumbs–up.
“You’re amazing.”
