“Ms. Reid handed it all out,” Kate said.

“Ms. Reid is amazing! I really miss her. I wanna thank her in person!”

“She’s very busy, but I’m sure she already knows everything you want to say,” Kate replied gently.

“Really?” Cloudia asked softly.

“Yes,” Kate said, smiling with emotion.

She helped Cloudia onto the bike and headed back toward the residential area.

Anthony was responsible for Haylight Base’s agricultural production and usually stayed in the suburban villa district. Kate had been assigned to work at the factories, which let her handle school drop-offs and pickups. Since it was Hearthfall, Anthony rode his bike into the city, and their family could finally spend the day together. Kate had never imagined that their family could live something close to a normal, pre-apocalypse life again.

Their daughter could still go to school at the right age.

Following Hayley, their lives just kept getting better.

And they would only keep improving.

“Mom, can we make some Hearthfall cakes later and give them to Ms. Reid? I wanna give her a gift!” Cloudia said.

“Of course. We’ll make them when we get home,” Kate replied warmly.

After they left, a 13-year-old girl slowly walked out of the school gate.
