The moment I saw the registration slip, I put the pieces together.
Lucille must have gone behind my back last night and texted Leon, begging him to pull strings for us.
But Leon was a man of principle. So, his 'solution' was to physically come down to the registration desk and wait in line for us like everyone else.
Knowing he had just worked a grueling night shift made me want to crawl into a hole and die of embarrassment. "Thank you, Leon. I... I'm so sorry for the trouble."
Leon brushed it off with a warm smile. "We're friends. Don't worry about it."
His kindness only made my guilt heavier. I was just about to apologize again when my phone rang. It was Lucille.
She and Silas had just arrived at the outpatient entrance.
Hearing this, Leon immediately suggested, "It gets chaotic around here in the mornings. Let's go meet them."
Ten minutes later, we found Lucille and Silas near the entrance.
"Thank you so much, Leon!" Lucille laid on the charm thick. "Selena is so lucky to have a friend like you."
I couldn't hold back my frustration. "That's enough, Mom. Never do this again."
Lucille caught the sharp reprimand in my tone. She blinked, feigning complete innocence, and offered a soft smile. "I never intended to trouble Leon! Silas's scans finally came through, so I just reached out to consult with him about the results. Leon is just such a sweetheart, he offered to help us out. Why are you snapping at me?"
Leon jumped in to cover for her. "Exactly, Mrs. Lowell just wanted a second opinion on the scans. And getting a ticket was no big deal. It was completely by the book. Don't stress over it, Selena."
