Leon was acting a little differently today.
I couldn't exactly put my finger on what was off.
His voice was still the same gentle tone, and he spoke with his usual refined manners, yet his words carried a distinct edge.
It felt like teasing, but also like outright sarcasm.
But he didn't even know the truth about my marriage to Ferris. They were childhood friends—their bond was leagues ahead of whatever connection I had with Leon.
If he was going to take a side, surely he wouldn't pick mine?
Furthermore, his eyes were crinkling with a smile as he spoke, not looking like a guy throwing shade at his old classmate.
As for Ferris, he clearly hadn't expected Leon to joke around like that. His hand, holding his fork, paused in mid-air. Then, he slowly turned his head, staring at Leon in utter silence.
Ferris possessed a massive presence, a deep-seated arrogance that seemed carved into his bones. When he went quiet, it radiated an immense, suffocating pressure.
It was a stark contrast to Leon's approachable, easygoing nature.
Sitting this close, I could see the completely different auras of the two doctors.
One was icy and aloof, the other warm and genuine. Ice and fire. Most people would have withered under Ferris's intense glare, losing their nerve instantly. But not Leon. Instead of cowing like the other doctors, he sat up straighter, looking completely unfazed.
He wasn't backing down an inch.
After a brief, silent standoff, Leon grinned broadly. "What's wrong, Dr. Sterling? Did I say something that upset you?"
Ferris withdrew his gaze, put a bite of salad into his mouth, and began chewing with elegant composure.
He didn't acknowledge Leon's question.
It was a blatant display of dismissal, and quite rude.
Zoey picked up on the tension instantly and jumped in to smooth things over. "You're misunderstanding, Dr. Lennox! Everyone has different tastes. Some like sweet, some like spicy. As long as it suits your own palate, that's what matters most, right?"
Her eyes curved sweetly as she spoke, the dimples at the corners of her mouth radiating a fresh, innocent charm.
Who wouldn't adore such a considerate girl?
