The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 153

The chime of the doorbell confirmed I wasn't hallucinating. Zoey was standing right outside.

It was barely six in the morning. For the young intern to show up uninvited at this hour... had she noticed me sneaking in?

My chest tightened in panic. I whipped around to look at Ferris, lowering my voice to a frantic whisper. "What do we do now?"

Ferris merely glanced at me, his expression perfectly calm. He didn't look the least bit flustered about getting caught.

The doorbell rang again, and this time, Zoey's voice sounded decidedly more anxious. "Ferris, are you awake? Are you in there?"

She started knocking on the door.

Hearing the urgency, it felt like she was moments away from breaking the door down. My heart hammered against my ribs.

Ferris finally acknowledged the situation. He cleared his throat and called out, "Who is it?"

"It's me, Ferris," she replied, her tone a perfect blend of eager excitement and pathetic grievance. "You drank so much last night, and I couldn't reach your phone. I was just so worried about you."

So, she had tried calling him too.

Ferris pinched the bridge of his nose. Before he could respond, Zoey spoke up again.

"By the way, Ferris, I had the kitchen make you some hangover soup. Is it okay if I bring it in?"

Bring it in?

I stared at Ferris, completely paralyzed by the sheer audacity of the situation.

Yes, we were legally married, but if that girl pushed the door open right now and found us together, how on earth were we supposed to explain it?

Ferris seemed to realize the exact same thing. After a two-second pause, his dark eyes shifted from my face to the bathroom. He gave me a sharp, deliberate nod.

He wanted me to hide?

I stared back at him, seeing the undeniable finality in his gaze. A crushing wave of despair washed over me.

But then reality set in. Letting Zoey inside was probably the smartest move. If she had heard something out in the hallway and he refused to let her in, it would only look infinitely more suspicious.

With a heavy sigh, I quietly slipped into the bathroom.

Seconds after I slid the door shut, Zoey's sugary voice filtered through the cracks. "I'm so sorry, Ferris. I was just too worried about you. Did I wake you up?"
