"No, no, nothing like that!" Zoey stammered, flustered. "Just a simple dinner."
After saying that, she suddenly seemed to remember I was standing right behind them. She spun around, her voice dripping with consideration. "You must be hungry too, Selena! What are you in the mood for?"
Considering the excruciating romantic drama I'd been forced to watch for the past hour, I politely declined. "I already have plans. Maybe next time."
Zoey looked genuinely surprised, raising an eyebrow. "Don't tell me you're meeting up with Leon?"
I had no idea why she was trying to link me to Leon again. I paused for a beat before answering simply, "No."
The elevator chimed as it reached the lobby. I stepped past them and hurried out into the night.
The rain was still pouring, and the biting wind hit my face, instantly snapping me out of my depressed stupor. I turned back to watch the elevator doors close, slowly unclenching my fists. My nails had left deep, stinging indentations in my skin.
I truly believed I was past the point of caring. But seeing Ferris shower Zoey with such shameless affection still threw me completely off balance.
They had only known each other for a month or two. Compared to my eight years, it was nothing. But life was just brutally unfair like that.
The tenderness I had desperately craved and waited a lifetime for, she had obtained effortlessly.
So what exactly did that make me?
Right at this very moment, Zoey was probably settling into his passenger seat, while I was left to brave the freezing rain on my walk to the subway.
An hour later, I arrived back at Eden Gardens. Peeling off my soaking wet coat, I headed straight for the master bathroom. I was just about to push the door open when it suddenly swung outward. I scrambled backward in shock, coming face-to-face with a broad, sculpted chest.
