His expression instantly darkened. His predatory gaze locked onto my face, assessing me with naked scrutiny. "Just a while ago, Dr. Hayes was swearing up and down to wait until the contract expired. Getting impatient so soon? Or have you already found your next meal ticket?"

A suffocating wave of despair washed over me, but I forced down the bitterness in my chest. "Aren't you the one who already found your replacement, Dr. Sterling?"

"Selena!" he snapped, raising his voice. He closed the distance between us in two long strides, towering over me with an intense glare. "I warned you not to play these twisted little games. Did my words just go in one ear and out the other?"

The sharp, crisp scent of his cedarwood cologne invaded my senses, wrapping me in a suffocating, aggressive aura. I forced myself to meet his eyes, but the sheer, unspoken dominance in his gaze made me falter. I looked away, stubbornly muttering, "I don't know what you're..."
