Chapter 87

ARIA

The hospital called this morning. Dad woke up. After three weeks since my kidnapping, I could walk a few steps with crutches. Every step hurt. The doctors said I’d never run or jump again. But I was out of the wheelchair and could walk short distances with help.

But dad’s awakening made me question my fake death plan. Was this heaven’s way of telling me it wouldn’t work?

This could be the turning point we’ve been waiting for.

I rushed to the hospital, my mind racing with conflicting emotions. Ten years in a coma, and now he’s finally awake. At least Blake kept one promise – getting dad the best medical care possible.

The hallway smelled of antiseptic and coffee as nurses smiled at me. They’d grown familiar with my visit, and today their smiles seemed

warmer, more encouraging.

When I entered the room, I saw dad lying there with his eyes half-open. I couldn’t hold back my tears.

“Dad!” I cried, rushing to his bedside and grabbing his hand.

When he saw me, his eyes focused. Tears streamed down his face, but he could only make “ah, ah” sounds. His body barely moved despite

his obvious efforts to speak.

“Dad, it’s me, Aria,” I said, wiping away my tears. “You’re finally awake.”

His fingers twitched against mine.

The door suddenly burst open. Christine charged in, breathing heavily, her shrill voice shattering our moment.

“Is Aaron really awake?” she demanded, her eyes darting around the room suspiciously.

I stood up straight, instinctively blocking her from dad’s bed. “Christine, you wanted my dad dead. Too bad for you he woke up.

I realized she must have bribed someone at Redwood Medical Center. How else would she know so quickly? Her fingers nervously twisted the strap of her purse as her eyes kept shifting.

“This is a complete disaster!” Christine’s face turned pale. She stepped forward with threatening eyes. ‘Get out of my way, or I swear you’ll

regret it!”

I didn’t budge. “You won’t hurt him again.”

Christine grabbed the water bottle from the bedside table and swung it at my head. I raised my arms to protect myself, bracing for the

Blake charged into the room just in time. He kicked Christine away, sending her crashing against the wall.

“I think you’re the one who deserves a beating, Blake said, his voice ice-cold and dangerous.

His hand rested protectively on my shoulder. Despite everything between us, in this moment I felt safer with him here. He’d stationed two security guards outside dad’s room since the beginning – another promise he’d kept.

Dad struggled on the bed, trying desperately to protect me despite his condition. All he could manage were urgent ‘ah! ah!” sounds that

broke my heart.

Matthew rushed in, alarmed by the commotion.

‘Christine, what are you afraid of?” Matthew asked directly, his piercing gaze making her squirm. “Why does Aaron’s awakening terrify you so much? Are you afraid he’ll reveal something? Tell us the truth!”

Dad kept struggling, his eyes fixed on Christine, desperately trying to speak but producing only painful sounds.

Christine quickly adjusted her rumpled clothes as tears immediately appeared in her eyes. “I’m just concerned about Aaron. That’s why I’m emotional.” She turned to me, her voice sharp as a knife, “It’s this unfilial daughter preventing me from seeing my own husband!”

She noticed dad couldn’t speak clearly and visibly relaxed. I caught that flash of satisfaction in her eyes. God, she makes me sick.

“Aaron needs better care, Christine said, dabbing at her fake tears. “I’m taking him home. As his wife, it’s my responsibility.”

I laughed without humor. “So you can continue abusing him at home? You’ve always wanted dad dead. I won’t let that happen.”

Christine’s face turned ashen. “How dare you speak to your mom like that! Such disrespect!”

I know the truth now. I’m not her biological daughter. Never was. And I’m not afraid to expose her anymore.

As our confrontation intensified, a calm male voice came from the doorway: “What’s going on here?”

Richard stood there holding an elegant fruit basket. Christine looked like she’d seen a ghost.

“Mr. Grant, what brings you here?’ Her voice jumped an octave higher.

Richard smiled politely. “I heard Christine got a call about Aaron waking up, so I came right over.” His eyes moved to dad with an

expression I couldn’t read.

Christine’s face turned white as paper. “I… I have matters to attend to at home. I must go now.”

She grabbed her purse and rushed toward the door, shooting me a hateful glance that sent chills down my spine.

What is she afraid of? Why did Richard’s appearance panic her so much?

‘Had I known you were coming, I would have tidied up the room,” I said to Richard, watching his reaction carefully.

Richard responded kindly: “Don’t worry, Aria. I’m just here to see an old friend.”

When dad saw Richard, his reaction shocked me to my core. He became more agitated than when he saw me, tears flowing freely as his

body shook violently. He made urgent “ah ah ah ah sounds, desperately trying to move his fingers, nearly falling off the bed.

I’ve never seen dad this emotional. His eyes held not just grief but something deeper I couldn’t identify.

Richard grabbed dad’s hand before I could reach him. This confused me.

“Aaron, do you have something to tell me?” Richard asked softly.

Dad couldn’t answer, but his eyes filled with such profound sorrow that it broke my heart all over again.

“I know you’re conscious but can’t express yourself yet,” Richard’s voice became exceptionally gentle. “This time I’m not going anywhere. I’ll wait for you to recover, wait until you can speak again.”

His promise carried a deep remorse, like he was making amends for some past mistake. I stood watching, feeling like I was witnessing a

history I knew nothing about.

Dad’s fingers trembled as he gripped Richard’s hand tightly. But he had settled down emotionally, and they ended up ‘talking for quite a while. When Richard said he needed to go, he wouldn’t let me walk him out-just told me to focus on taking care of Dad.

Everything was moving in the right direction. I suggested that I wanted to personally take care of my father, but Blake firmly refused, saying he would hire the best caregivers. I compromised.
