The conference room felt suffocating. Forty executives sat around my table, industry leaders who commanded respect everywhere else.

Here, they were nothing but an audience I didn’t want.

Luke Smith was talking. Something about Singapore expansion rates. The words hit my ears but didn’t register. All I could think about was

her.

I’d carried Aria’s broken body home yesterday. Cleaned her wounds. Applied medication to cuts I shouldn’t have caused. She’d passed out in my arms, and for one terrifying moment, I’d thought I’d actually broken her.

But she was fine this morning. Fine enough to ignore me completely.

My phone sat on the table in front of me, screen dark. No calls. No texts. Nothing.

She should have called. Should have thanked me for bringing her home. Should have acknowledged that I’d taken care of her.

“Mr. Morgan?” Luke’s voice cut through my thoughts. “The Singapore projections show a fifteen percent increase in Q4, which means we

should consider-

“Fine.” I didn’t look at him.

“But sir, we haven’t discussed the-

“I said fine. Move on.”

The room went quiet. They could sense something was wrong. Good. Let them be uncomfortable.

My fingers drummed on the table. Where was she? What was she doing right now that was more important than calling me?

The phone sat there, mocking me.

I picked it up, turning it over in my hand. Maybe I’d missed something. A notification. A message.

Nothing.

The CFO started talking about quarterly reports. Numbers and charts appeared on the screen. I didn’t process any of it.

My thumb moved to Aria’s contact before I could stop it. The call button glowed, daring me to press it.

I hit dial.

The room seemed to hold its breath as I put the phone to my ear. Forty executives pretending to look at their papers while watching me.

One ring.

Two rings. My free hand gripped the table edge.

Three rings. She was going to answer. She had to answer.

Four rings. Five.

Then silence.

She didn’t pick up. For me. For Blake Morgan.

I lowered the phone slowly, staring at the dark screen. The rejection sat in my chest.

“Mr. Morgan, about the budget allocation- Someone was still talking.

I dialed again.

This time, she answered on the second ring. For one brief moment, I felt triumph.

Then she hung up.

The phone nearly shattered in my grip. Around the table, forty executives suddenly found their paperwork fascinating.

“Meeting’s over.” My voice came out too calm. The kind of calm that preceded disasters. “Get out.”

Nobody moved.

‘Now.”

They scattered. Papers flew everywhere. Chairs crashed. Grown adults shoved past each other to escape.

Within thirty seconds, I was alone with my fury.

My fist connected with the mahogany table. Wood splintered under the impact. Pain shot through my knuckles, but it was nothing compared to the rage burning in my chest.

Aria Taylor. My contract wife who thought she could dismiss me. Who thought she could hang up on me twice and face no consequences.

She had no idea what she’d just started.

I stared at her contact information on the screen. Those executives who’d fled would curse her name for weeks. They’d blame the mysterious caller for my foul mood, for whatever hell I was about to rain down on them.

But they didn’t matter. Only one thing mattered now.

Teaching Aria Taylor exactly where she stood in my world.

And it sure as hell wasn’t above me.

ARIA

“Sorry about that.” I shoved my phone back in my pocket, forcing myself to look at Jonathan. “Spam calls.”

He didn’t believe me but didn’t push it. “Your father is stable. The improvements are significant, but recovery will take time.”

“Can I visit more often? Outside regular hours?”

“Absolutely. Family members have open access.” He paused. “I’m sure it’s difficult to get away from Morgan Enterprises though.

“Actually, I’ll probably have more free time soon.” Very soon, if Blake’s mood was any indication.

“That would be good for your father.” Jonathan’s voice warmed. “The more you’re here, the better his chances.”

I nodded, suddenly exhausted. The DNA results, Dad’s improvement, Blake’s calls. It was too much.

“I should go.” I stood up, gathering my things.

“Aria.” Jonathan touched my arm lightly. “Those bandages on your wrists. Are you safe?”

The concern in his eyes was real. Almost too real.

“I’m fine. Really.” I pulled my sleeve down. “Just an accident at work.”

He didn’t believe me. I could see it. But he let it go.

“Take care of yourself. Your father needs you healthy.”

I left before he could ask more questions.

The hallway felt too long. Every window I passed, I checked the reflection behind me. Nobody suspicious. No obvious followers.

But the prickling sensation was back. Stronger now.

I took the elevator down, watching the numbers descend. Second floor. First floor. Ground level.

The doors opened and I stepped into the lobby. Through the glass entrance, I could see the dark sedan parked across the street.

Still there.

I walked out slowly, keeping my movements casual. Hailed a taxi. Gave the driver an address.

In the side mirror, I watched the sedan pull out behind us.

“Change of plans,” I told the driver. “Columbus Circle instead.”

The sedan followed.

“Actually, turn left here.”

The driver gave me an annoyed look but obeyed. The sedan turned too.

“Let me out at the next corner. I handed him cash. “Keep it.”

I ducked into a coffee shop and watched through the window. The sedan stopped half a block down. Engine running. Waiting.

My phone buzzed. Blake again. I declined without looking.

This wasn’t Blake’s style. He confronted directly, violently. This was calculated. Patient.

Dangerous.

I ordered coffee to justify being there and sat by the window. The sedan didn’t move. Just sat there, tinted windows hiding whoever was

inside.

Ten minutes passed. Then fifteen.

I couldn’t stand it anymore. Whoever this was, they could face me directly.

I walked outside and headed straight for the car.

The passenger door opened before I reached it. A man stepped out, tall and well-dressed. Expensive suit.

His face was angular, handsome in a cruel way. And his eyes held nothing but hatred.

He walked toward me with long, deliberate strides.

“Stop right there, Aria Taylor.”

I stopped, holding my ground. ‘Who’s asking?”

“Jacob Williams. His expression was hard. “My father’s in federal prison because of you. My family lost everything because of you. Isn’t

that right?”
