Chapter 58
“Stop right now.” Blake’s voice was ice. “You’re finished. We’re leaving.”
I tried to pull away. “You said I couldn’t leave until everything was cleared. Remember that?”
“You’re bleeding everywhere. Come with me. Now.”
“Why?” I yanked harder. “You wanted me to clean up this garbage, right? Because I’m so attached to it? Well, I’m not finished. Can’t have
the CEO’s assistant disobeying direct orders from the boss.
His grip tightened. “I’m telling you to stop. You need a doctor.”

“Since when do you care about what I need?” The words burned coming out. “Oh wait, you don’t. You just don’t want me bleeding all over
Emma’s perfect party.”
*Aria-
“Let go of me.”
“You’re being insane. You need-
The crack of my palm against his face echoed across the yard.
“I said. Let. Go.”
The silence was deafening. Emma’s friends stood frozen, drinks halfway to their lips. Emma herself looked ready to faint. And Blake…
Blake’s eyes went arctic. The kind of cold that burns.
I turned back to the debris pile. To hell with all of them. To hell with him and his moods and his punishments and his-
The world tilted. Strong arms scooped me up before I could process what was happening. Blake had me against his chest, striding toward
the driveway.
“Put me down right now!” I struggled against his hold. “The debris isn’t cleared! I have to-
“Shut your mouth about the damn debris.”
“You’re the one who said-
“I said shut up.”

Chapter 58
He dumped me in the backseat. I lunged for the door handle, but he was already climbing in, blocking my escape.
‘Drive.” He snapped at the chauffeur.
“I need to go back. My hands wouldn’t stop shaking. “You said I couldn’t leave until-*
“Stop talking. He grabbed my wrists. “You can’t possibly clear all that alone.”
“Then why- My voice cracked. The adrenaline was wearing off, leaving nothing but pain. “Why would you do this to me?”
He didn’t answer.

“Is this entertaining for you?” Tears streamed down my face. “Watching me fall apart? Does destroying me make you feel powerful?”
His grip on my wrists froze.
“I understand you don’t love me. You love Emma. Fine. Whatever. But why does that mean you have to tear me down? My voice dropped. “If you don’t love someone, does that automatically mean you have to hurt them?”
More silence. He still held my wrists, but I’d stopped fighting. Why bother?
That’s when I noticed my hands were freezing. Weird.
The pain hit out of nowhere. Not the cuts-those were nothing. This came from deep inside, shooting up my spine and stealing my
breath.
No. Not now. Please.
But my body didn’t give a damn about timing. The shaking started in my gut and spread everywhere. My vision went fuzzy. Breathing
became impossible.
“Aria?” Blake sounded far away.
I couldn’t answer. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t do anything but drown in pain.
“It hurts. I gasped. “Everything hurts.
“We’re almost there. His voice had changed somehow. “The doctor will take care of your hands. You’ll be okay.”
I almost laughed. My hands? He thought this was about my damn hands?
Of course he did. Blake only saw what was right in front of him. Blood and cuts, the obvious stuff. Not the deeper damage. Not my spine screaming from that old fall from the tree. Not the exhaustion that went straight to my bones. Not the pieces of me he’d ripped away with every cruel word, every public humiliation, every reminder that I was nothing to him.
